Chanel suit and bag seen in Barbie to go up for auction at Bonhams
The pink tweed suit and patent bag will join a host of other archival Chanel designs going under the hammer this September
A pink tweed Chanel suit worn by Margot Robbie in the new Barbie movie, and first seen on Claudia Schiffer in the house’s SS95 runway show, is set to be auctioned by Bonhams this September. Valued at £1,500 – £2,000, the suit will be offered alongside the hot pink heart-shaped Chanel bag also carried by Robbie in Barbie which, as one of the rarest and hardest Chanel bags to acquire, is expected to go for in excess of £15,000.
“Barbie’ mania has taken the cinema and fashion world by storm. It was a delight for us to see Margot Robbie wearing the Chanel 1995 Spring/Summer tweed suit originally worn by Claudia Schiffer in the Barbie movie,” says Meg Randell, Head of Designer Bags & Fashion at Bonhams. “We recently sold the same design in our April Paris auction, and we are thrilled to be offering similar designs from the same collection in our upcoming September, The Art of Luxury: Chanel auction. It is an unmissable opportunity to get your hands on rare and collectable runway fashion pieces, handbags, and accessories.”
The items will be offered as part of the auction house’s The Art of Luxury: Chanel sale, which will run online from 11-21 September 2023 to coincide with the V&A’s major Chanel retrospective, which opens this autumn.
Alongside a host of other Barbie-approved lots, including a rainbow of Chanel ballet flats and a fuschia pink velvet quilted full-flap bag, the sale will also feature rare Chanel collector’s items, most notably an haute couture cream and gold silk jacket designed by Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel herself for the AW66 collection.
Other highlights in the sale hail from Karl Lagerfeld’s time as creative director. Among the most highly-anticipated fashion items is an SS16 couture ensemble fully embroidered with ornate beadwork by Maison Lesage. These will be complemented by an array of costume jewellery designed by Victoire de Castellane for the house, including a 1991 Gripoix and gold cruciform brooch and a pair of oversized No5 hoop earrings.
“Chanel has long been known as the name behind the world’s most coveted style,” adds Randell. “Gabrielle Chanel created some of the most iconic and elegant fashion statements, from the 2.55 flap handbag to the boucle suit, both of which have stood the test of time and continue to garner intense interest at auction. We are delighted to include a selection of haute couture designs, originally created for the elite Chanel couture buyers; the dedicated auction is ideal for those wishing to acquire their first piece of Chanel or for the seasoned collector looking to add to their collection.”
