If you have a thing for spectacular views, you’re in luck: London’s many residential high-rises have gorgeous penthouses

Are you the sort of person who has to have the best of everything? The shiniest car, the latest clothes? If so, we’re willing to bet that you’ll settle for nothing less than a penthouse when it comes to your home. How could you live in the knowledge that there are homes above yours (literally and metaphorically), with better views? Nicer balconies and/or roof terraces? Not a chance.

Which is why we’ve compiled a guide to some of the most spectacular London penthouses currently for sale (or rent). These top-floor apartments range from cloud-skimming new builds to warehouse-style open plans and even a period penthouse – because why settle for anything less than the best?

Newfoundland, E14

Canary Wharf’s built-to-rent skyscraper is officially home to the highest leasable apartments in the capital. Newfoundland – which is managed by Canary Wharf’s leasing arm, Vertus – is an engineering feat. The structure, designed by Horden Cherry Lee Architects, soars to 58 stories – its distinctive diagrid design reshaping the London skyline. The building houses 636 apartments, but if you have a penchant for heights, look no further than the Penthouse Collection. These ten homes reside on the top floor of Newfoundland, 220 metres above the ground.

Ebury Square, SW1W

Back in 2016, 1 Ebury Square made waves as the latest prime development to be built in Belgravia. The penthouse here is vast – just shy of 5,500 square feet and boasting four bedrooms and bathrooms – and occupies the sixth and seventh floors of a well-maintained new build on a quiet square. Rooms are flooded with light and interiors are opulent; penthouse residents also benefit from a huge private terrace area with impressive views.

Sky Villas at Battersea Power Station, SW11

Battersea Power Station is possibly the most buzzed-about residential project of the last year, and the handful of Sky Villas on Boiler House Square are the jewel in the crown. Living atop the Grade II* listed building, positioned between its iconic chimneys, means owning a coveted dual-aspect apartment with balconies and roof terraces yielding 360-degree views of London, and central communal gardens designed by a Chelsea Flower Show gold medallist. It’s a ‘slice of tranquillity in the sky’.

St George Wharf, SW8

OK, this is actually a sub-penthouse apartment, but we thought it deserved a place on this list because, well, look at it. St George Wharf is architecturally renowned for its ‘ship-like’ design, and the surrounding area of Nine Elms is quickly becoming one of the most desirable in the city. This apartment boasts one of the largest roof terraces on the river, yielding views to the London Eye, The Houses of Parliament and Battersea Power Station. Interiors, meanwhile, are newly renovated, and flooded with natural light.

Cashmere House, E1

Spread over three floors and boasting around 1,022 sq ft of outdoor space, this is a penthouse and a half. You enter the 20th floor of Cashmere House directly via the lift and here you’ll find the principal suite (with dressing area and en suite) and a large balcony situated to the rear of the apartment. A decked roof garden is located on the top floor, with incredible views of the City plus landmarks like Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and the London Eye.

The first apartment is a four-bedroom duplex, with great views, multiple roof terraces, and an abundance of natural light. The second – a three-bed – boasts generous ceiling heights, architectural skylights, and floor-to-ceiling windows.
