Another weekend wash out? We’ve got plenty to keep you entertained

It may officially be the start of summer, but the rainy skies and chilly evenings aren’t exactly enticing us outside for BBQs and sundowners. Make the most of the gloomy British climes and settle in for a streaming scorcher instead, with a host of final instalments and long-awaited follow ups. From exclusive feature films and limited series starring serious Hollywood heavyweights (Nicole Kidman and Jake Gyllenhaal we’re looking at you) to moving, historic documentaries on everything from ‘80s music legends to high stakes court cases, we’re particularly excited for both the Doctor Who and Bridgerton conclusions. Here are the best new films and TV shows to stream in June 2024.

Mayor of Kingstown Season 3, Paramount+

Having kicked off this week, tensions are high as tragedy strikes in Kingstown, while a new face of the Russian mob arrives on the scene. For those not familiar with the high stakes show, Mayor of Kingstown follows the McLusky family, power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan, where incarceration is big business. The crime drama ricochets between the police, criminals, inmates, prison guards and politicians, as they tackle the pressing contemporary themes of racism, exploitation and injustice in a plight to restore order.

The Truth vs Alex Jones, Now TV

Few will have forgotten the shocking tragedy of the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Connecticut in 2012, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot and killed 26 people, most of them children aged six and seven. But for many years, conspiracist Alex Jones has loudly denied that the event ever took place and, as more and more people flocked to his website, Infowars, he has been able to generate millions of dollars in revenue perpetrating these harmful conspiracy theories. Filmed over four years, The Truth vs Alex Jones documents the courtroom drama of two defamation lawsuits brought against Jones by victims’ families – and their historic outcomes.

Presumed Innocent, Apple TV+

An eight-episode limited series executive produced by Jake Gyllenhaal, and based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, the Hollywood heartthrob also wows in the lead role of chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich. A horrific murder shakes the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when one of its own stands accused, resulting in a gripping series that has all the grit, thrills, power struggles and drama you could want. The star-studded cast also includes Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, Elizabeth Marvel, Peter Sarsgaard, O-T Fagbenle, and Renate Reinsve.

Bridgerton Season 3, Part 2, Netflix 

The nation is quivering in its corsets as it awaits the final drop of Bridgerton’s steamy third instalment, with four episodes set to be released this month. Streaming giant Netflix has been keeping our appetites whet with an endless stream of behind-the-scenes snapshots as we wait patiently to follow Colin and Penelope’s lusty love saga through to the end. Since the third Bridgerton brother is totally in the dark about the identity of his fiancée’s alter ego, Lady Whistledown, whom he has vowed to uncover at all costs, we can expect plenty of high drama among the high society. The Boys Season 4, Prime Video

A fast-paced satirical superhero series based on the comic book franchise of the same name; the latest series of the definitely-not-for-kids The Boys see the crew heading for darker times. The first episode opens to a world on the brink, with the boys desperately trying to stop the power-hungry ‘supes’ before it’s too late. An irreverent take on what happens when superheroes abuse their superpowers, the boys continue their heroic quest to expose the truth about The Seven and Vought – the multibillion-dollar conglomerate that manages the superheroes and covers up their deep, dirty secrets.

House of the Dragon Season 2, Now TV

Release your inner dragon this summer with the much-anticipated return of House of the Dragon, which is back with a roaring second season. Following on from season one, the series is set 200 years before the gargantuan mega-series Game of Thrones, and relives the sordid, sexy, power-hungry story of House Targaryen. Picking up where viewers left off, with Westeros on the brink of a civil war (again), the Green and Black Councils are fighting for King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra. The trailers deliver a teasing mix of action, drama, romance, and gore, plus some of the best battle scenes yet.

The Isle of Wight Festival 2024, Now TV

One for all the music lovers who didn’t get tickets to the real event (or just don’t fancy the portaloos), catch some of summer’s biggest performances from this year’s Isle of Wight Festival without having to leave the house. Dance along with to the Pet Shop Boys, The Prodigy, and Green Day, alongside performances from The Streets, Keane, Simple Minds, Jessie J and many more. No queuing for warm, overpriced pints required.

Doctor Who: Empire of Death, BBC iPlayer/Disney+

The epic two-part finale of Doctor Who season 14, The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death, will be beamed across cinemas on 21 June, but sofa surfers can tune in from the comfort of home on the very same date. So far fans have watched Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor, together with Ruby Sunday, face the Bogeyman and Maestro, and live to tell the tale of the battle of Kastarion 3. Tune in to see the duo arrive at UNIT headquarters on a covert mission – only to discover a mysterious secret waiting for them.

A Family Affair, Netflix


Starring Hollywood heavyweights Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, and Joey King, the premise of this hilarious, cringe-worthy saga sees Zara (King) walk in on her boss and mother in bed together. As a surprising romance kicks off, expect a number of opportune mishaps when it comes to love, relationships, and… privacy. Director Richard Lagravenese (Beautiful Creatures, P.S. I Love You) describes it as “a coming-of-age story for three different characters at three different stages of their lives.”
