If your idea of the perfect autumn night in involves a roaring fire and something delicious, smooth and ideally amber-hued in your favourite crystal tumbler, then we’re on board. This year, however, allow us to introduce something a little different to your usual warming tipple: Soberano 12 Gran Reserva brandy.

Nicknamed the ‘spirit of Spain’, Soberano 12 is the distillation of over 100 years of expertise from the Gonzalez Byass sherry producer and one of the finest brandies in the world, recently taking home Gold at the International Spirits Competition 2023. But what business does a sherry producer have making brandy? The secret is all in the casks.

While brandy is a distilled wine spirit (and Soberano is made using only the finest Airén grapes grown in the La Mancha region of Spain), as with whisky, much of a brandy’s distinctive flavour is imparted by the casks in which it is matured.

Every drop of Soberano 12 is matured in highly-prized American oak casks which previously contained Gonzalez Byass Solera 1847 sherry. Plus, despite three years being the legal minimum for brandy maturation, Soberano 12 is matured for at least 12 years, imparting a unique aroma, colour and flavour you won’t find anywhere else.

As suggested by its elegant mahogany hue, on the nose Soberano 12 is woody and nutty with both sweet and roasted notes while, on the palate, its velvety texture translates to a well-rounded, complex flavour with a pleasingly refined aftertaste. But, while it’s all well and good us telling you that, surely it’s better just to try some yourself?
