The British know quality shoemaking. You only need to take a peek at the Derbies and boots sported by Daniel Craig’s James Bond to know heritage British shoemaking is synonymous with a well-dressed man. And which cobbler is behind 007’s footwear of choice? Northampton shoemaker Crockett & Jones, of course.
Armed with an impressive legacy, Crockett & Jones boasts a solid reputation, having created quality boots for the British military during both World Wars. But, far from resting on its laurels, each season it bolsters its heritage moniker with an infusion of contemporary designs with traditional construction. Its quality craftsmanship manifests in fine shoes that are also functional and lasting – and this is especially true of the new offerings from the Autumn/Winter ‘23 collection.
Designed for striding across country landscapes as the temperatures drop, the brand’s personal history with Scotland informs much of the collection’s design vocabulary. Once a thriving wholesale market for Crockett & Jones, and a key inspiration for former Managing Director, Jonathon Jones, when redesigning the brand’s collections, this season Crockett & Jones looks north once more.
Rugged and practical, the AW23 collection draws on the natural wilderness of the Trossachs National Park, where serene locks and majestic hills dominate the landscape, to offer two high-performing leathers in numerous trusted silhouettes. So what’s on offer this season?
Crockett & Jones Rough-Out Suede
First up are new variants of Crockett & Jones’ signature Rough-Out Suede. This highly waxed suede is entirely waterproof, making it ideal for the great outdoors, and mirrors denim in that it just gets more comfortable with wear. AW23’s new colourway addition is a lighter oaky natural brown, perfect to pair with your favourite blue jeans. Opt for the iconic Chelsea 5 boots in Natural Rough-Out Suede with Dainite rubber soles for a weekend trek or pair the Kelso Derby boots with black jeans and an overcoat for a stroll around the city.
The material’s dark brown iteration finds favour with the more intricate Islay silhouette, inviting the wearer to get outdoors in these adventure-ready walnut-hued full brogue Derby boots. With robust storm-welts, a high leg design, and speed hooks, these boots will be a steadfast companion for seasons to come. Or consider the Lanark Derby shoes with their versatile plain upper and chunky cleated sole for an understated yet polished aesthetic.
Crockett & Jones Hurricane Hide
Another signature material, the Hurricane Hide also undergoes a transformation for AW23. This heavyweight leather, originating from Portuguese or Spanish bulls, is dyed and tanned with excess oils to make it highly water-resistant. The long-lasting material is offered in a light sand shade along with a dark coffee colour this season.
The brand’s longest-serving beloved Derby boots, the high-leg Coniston, are rendered in a sand-hued Hurricane Hide. With clean lines and increased toe depth, pair these boots with practically anything. Alternatively, look to the coffee-coloured Cornell 5-eyelet Derby shoes for a chunky option perfect for weekends in the country. The Harris Chelsea boot, meanwhile, offers a silhouette that is both easy to wear and smart in town or country. Featuring two and one punching on the upper with a thick Vibram rubber sole, wear with a bomber jacket for an adventure-ready look.
