Most Wanted: ALEXACHUNG X Superga Sneakers
The ALEXACHUNG X Superga sneaker features a chunkier sole and signature branding
Alexa Chung has long placed a low-key, insouciant spin on seasoned trends, be it slipping a hoodie beneath a trench coat, slashing her denim or grounding floral dresses with battered kicks. In testament to the latter, the model and fashion designer has designed a new collection of sneakers in partnership with Superga, injecting a playful dash of Brit idiosyncrasy into the time-honoured Italian style.
So-called after the Superga Hill in Turin, Italy, the Italian sneaker brand was founded in 1911 by Walter Martiny as a rubber-sole shoe brand for local farmers. The now iconic 2750 model was created in 1925, diversifying the brand into mainstream sport and fashion.
Superga’s appeal lies in its simplicity; it is still a purveyor of the perfect, clean-lined sneaker, available in a spectrum of neutral and eye-popping shades. The Superga trainer has become the model’s go-to between shows during fashion week and it is ubiquitous at festivals.
Superga had a surge in popularity last year when Kate Middleton was spotted throughout summer in a pair of the Cotu Classic sneakers. However, we prefer its more rock ‘n’ roll ambassadors, like Binx Walton, Jack Guinness, Charlie Casely-Hayford and Suki Waterhouse (who collaborated with the brand in 2014).
Chung has been an ambassador for Superga since 2011. For her own collection, she has restyled the classic Superga silhouette in fabrics spanning satin, terry towel and cotton in shades of sky blue, burgundy, off-white and mustard, alongside creating a ‘dream hightop’, designed to be worn with cropped jeans for the ‘perfect ankle gap’.
