Lean into all things Valentine's with a month of Netflix and chill

The longest, darkest month in the calendar has finally been and gone and love is in the air for February. But forget putting all your eggs in one basket on the 14th, and instead make a month out of Valentine’s Day by wining and dining at home. Because nothing says ‘I love you’ quite like a home-cooked meal, followed by an evening on the sofa with a brand-new box set. With great new TV from the likes of Louis Theroux’s production company Mindhouse; two Noughties film-to-TV-mini-series reboots with One Day and Mr and Mrs Smith; plus, some big Hollywood names in historical drama The New Look, these new shows aren’t just looking good on paper. And with the sixth season of Love is Blind kicking off on V-day itself, there really is no reason to go out. These are the best new films and TV shows to stream in February 2024.

Feud: Capote vs The Swans, Disney+

The follow-up season to the original 2017 Feud series, which retold the story of the feud between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, the second instalment is based on the best-selling book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer. Focusing on the fallout after Esquire published an excerpt of Capote’s (still unpublished) novel, Answered Prayers, which drew heavily on thinly fictionalised accounts of the scandals of his very rich (and very real) friends, the series delves beneath the glossy surface to uncover how the tight-knit group of New York socialites turned on their friend after this huge betrayal.

Mr & Mrs Smith, Prime Video

A reboot of the famous 2005 film that starred Noughties heartthrobs Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, this American spy comedy follows the same premise with an updated cast, and context. Having modernised the plot into a full television series, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine star as lead characters Jane and John: two lonely strangers who gave up their lives and identities to be forced together as partners – both in holy matrimony and espionage.

Produced by Louis Theroux’s production company Mindhouse, this fascinating Sky Original feature documentary explores whether the astounding events that led to a divisive criminal trial were, in fact, a misunderstood love affair or a tale of sexual assault and predatory behaviour. The controversial premise explores the relationship between a married female professor and a non-verbal black man with cerebral palsy. The nuanced and delicate story, as well as the high-profile criminal trial, will challenge viewer’s perceptions of disability and consent.

One Day, Netflix

Based on the wildly successful 2009 David Nicholls novel (which was also made into a film starring Anne Hathaway in 2011), this romantic drama series focuses on two people who vow to honour their relationship after one platonic, but life-changing, night together. The new TV series will once again visit protagonists Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley on the same day (15th July, St Swithin’s Day) over the course of 20 years, as their relationship evolves. Starring Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod, it’s a love story fit for every generation.
