Mocktail of the Week: Dr Ananas by Jikoni
Continue your commitment to Dry January with this flu-busting mocktail that's bound to brighten up your Friday night
Statistically, more than 50 per cent of UK adults who committed to Dry January at the beginning of the year are likely to give up their alcohol-free ambitions by the second week of the month – on the 16th to be exact (unsurprisingly, the day after Blue Monday) – according to a poll by Volvic. So, if you’re still firmly on the bandwagon, we salute you. And to help you on your teetotal endeavours (just two more weeks to go…), we’ve scouted out a recipe for yet another decadent mocktail guaranteed to cheer up even the bleakest, coldest January night.
Not only does this cocktail taste just like a summery spritz, it offers an array of rejuvenating powers especially helpful for those who feel they’re on the edge of succumbing to a cold (it is January, after all). Served throughout January at Jikoni – Marylebone‘s ‘no borders kitchen’ serving dishes inspired by flavours from Asia, Africa and the Middle East – Dr Ananas was created by Jikoni’s founder Ravinder Bhogal. She says, “Dr Ananas is packed with flu-busting qualities due to the ginger and turmeric, making it the perfect elixir to boost your immunity.” Here’s how to create this mocktail at home – including the special cordial you can make in batches, freeze and reach for when you feel a cold coming on…

Recipe
Dr Ananas cordial
Ingredients
-
Pineapple 1
-
Honey 5 tbsp
-
Fresh ginger 200g
-
Fresh tumeric root 100g
Method
- Prepare one large pineapple and chop into thin slices.
- Cover the slices in honey (just enough to submerge all of the pineapple slices) and leave overnight in a sealed container in the fridge.
- The next day, peel 200g of fresh ginger and 100g of fresh turmeric root.
- Blend these with the pineapple and honey mixture before passing everything through a large sieve.
- Once filtered, this can be bottled and will last a few days in the fridge. The cordial will be very eager to start fermenting from the natural yeast found in pineapples, so freeze in batches if you would like to store it for longer.
