The stucco-fronted property is designed with typical Tom Ford flair, in signature chocolate brown tones with gilded accents

When most people move into a new home, they immediately want to put their personal stamp on the place. Not so for the owner of this Chelsea mansion, who did little to change the interior design – and with good reason. Previously the home of Tom Ford, the Gilston Street townhouse was completely renovated by the fashion designer when he lived there, and it comes to market with his chosen aesthetic still very much intact.

The former creative director of Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford founded his eponymous fashion label in 2006, which he still heads up today, while simultaneously forging a burgeoning filmmaking career. His two films, A Single Man (2009) and Nocturnal Animal (2016), were both nominated for Academy Awards. He also serves as the chairman of the Board of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Despite his busy career, he still found time to personally oversee the refurbishment of this three-bedroom, three-bathroom home, which he reportedly had gutted and redesigned when he lived there. Located within the desirable The Boltons Conservation Area, the white stucco-fronted house is set back behind a high wall, and boasts large bay windows and a spacious west-facing garden to the rear.

Beyond the traditional exterior, the property has been given a contemporary makeover. Spread over four floors, the end-of-terrace house has been designed with entertaining in mind, with a large kitchen and wine cellar on the lower ground floor and spacious dining and reception rooms on the ground floor. An expansive dressing room has ample storage space (all the more room to hang your favourite Tom Ford suits), while a gym and steam room add further character to the property.

Where Ford has truly left his mark is in the design. There are glossy black walls in the dining and living rooms, deep mahogany walls in the study and a white floating staircase running through the centre of the property. In one of the bedrooms, the walls are stainless steel. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but that is the beauty of bespoke — just like his suits, Ford’s home is perfectly made to measure.
