Property of the month: A South Kensington mews home with an illustrious history
Recently renovated, this covetable home is ripe for a new owner to put their stamp on
They may now be among the most desirable (and Instagrammable) homes in London but, once upon a time, the pretty mews houses of Kensington and Chelsea were reserved solely for those serving the elite living in the area’s large townhouses.
Such is the case with this pretty property on Kynance Mews in South Kensington. Recently renovated and on the market with Lurot Brand for £3.95 million, this historical home, like many others on the street, began life as accommodation for the grooms, farriers, coachmen and drivers employed by the wealthy residents of nearby Cornwall Gardens. In fact, until 1924 the street was known as Cornwall Mews and, to this day, remains part of the Cornwall Gardens Estate.
Regarded as one of the most beautiful and famous mews streets in London, Kynance has also featured in a number of major films and television series, including The Big Sleep, Star! featuring Julie Andrews and Damage starring Juliette Binoche. Accordingly, properties on the street rank as some of the most desirable in the capital and rarely come to market, making this home, one of the mews’ largest, a highly attractive proposition.
Spanning over 1,000 square feet of living space, the home offers three bedrooms, including an en suite master, and two further bathrooms, as well as bright, modern reception rooms and a light-filled kitchen. Unusual for this area, and highly prized for those with families, pets or who enjoy entertaining, is a rear patio with space for dining.
Recently refurbished, and decorated in neutral tones of white, black and grey, there is also plenty of scope for an owner with a strong sense of style (or great interior designer) to turn this blank canvas into their dream home.
New owners take heed, however, it didn’t take long for the social media set to cotton on to this gorgeous street (do a quick search for Kynance Mews on Instagram and you’ll see what we mean). But appearing in the background of a few influencer photoshoots is, in our humble opinion, a small price to pay for a permanent home on this leafiest of South Kensington streets.
