Pantone has just announced Living Coral as its "life-affirming" 2019 Colour of the Year: a warm, vibrant and expressive shade that champions the protection of coral reefs

Move along, Millennial Pink – Living Coral is on its way in. Specifically, the shade numbered 16-1546. They’re pretty keen on it at Pantone: it’s not just coral – it’s “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens”. The 2019 Colour of the Year was unveiled at Miami Basel, as chosen by the colour experts at the Pantone Color Institute (what a job); this accords it a special position on the rainbow spectrum, following in the bright footsteps of Ultra Violet (2018), Greenery (2017) and Rose Quartz (2016). For two decades now, Pantone’s Colour of the Year has influenced product development and buying decisions in industries as diverse as fashion, home furnishings and industrial design, as well as product, packaging, and graphic design.

Protecting our planet has been front-page news for most of 2018 so it’s no surprise that Pantone has chosen such a topical shade. “In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent colour mesmerises the eye and mind”, explain the colour experts. “Lying at the centre of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Pantone Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of colour.”

What else does it offer? Living Coral, “vibrant, yet mellow… sociable and spirited… provides comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment… and welcomes and encourages light-hearted activity.” Quite.
