John Bell & Croyden

It may still be regarded as one of London’s best-kept secrets, but John Bell & Croyden has long been leading the way in the beauty, health and wellness world. Tucked away on Wigmore Street, just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, this iconic destination has evolved over its 225 years in business – from an 18th-century apothecary to London’s most exclusive luxury beauty and wellness emporium.

Founded in 1798 by trailblazing pharmacist John Bell, with the help of his son Jacob, the original store opened on Oxford Street and quickly became a sought-after destination for every pharmaceutical need and holistic remedy. Far more than mere retailers, however, the pair played a key role in establishing the pharmacist profession in the UK; Jacob went on to establish the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and became the first editor of the Pharmaceutical Journal. Their store, meanwhile, became an institution, earning a reputation for its excellence and expertise.

At its origins, everything sold at John Bell & Croyden was made on the premises. Bespoke products were tailored to each individual’s needs, and as a result, business boomed, keeping its doors open seven days a week. As the years (and two centuries) passed, ownership changed hands several times, becoming part of the Lloyds Pharmacy chain and, for decades, holding a prestigious Royal Warrant as pharmacists to Queen Elizabeth II.

Today, John Bell & Croyden operates as a standalone business under Bestway Healthcare Group, and although supplying more modern offerings, its heritage remains at its heart. Its collection of luxury skincare and beauty treatments is mighty – featuring global brands including Avène (a French-founded favourite for sensitive skin), Cellcosmet (Swiss cellular skincare at its very best), La Roche-Posay (dermatologically-backed staples for all skin types) and Seabody (marine-based wellness).

As well as this plethora of long-standing brands, John Bell & Croydon is also home to emerging names, staying true to its innovative ethos. From Gezeiten (anti-ageing skincare backed by marine science) and Insium (the high-tech, clean, vegan and ethical skincare brand), to Loya (championing longevity wellness), Newroad30 (an organic supplements hero), and This is Silk (the multi-award-winning beauty and wellness brand), the selection is vast. And, yes, there are still pharmacy services available, too.

Now located in a quieter location surrounded by the chic boutiques and restaurants of Marylebone, a trip to the beautiful period home of John Bell & Croyden is an experience in itself. Get lost in this historical London bolthole that has a boutique feel and all the wellness, health and beauty products you could imagine. And, of course, it’s all online too.
