From smartphones to smartwatches and now smart rings, the tech world has long been on a mission to upgrade our everyday accessories. Smart rings, in particular, are having a moment right now, perhaps because of their screen-free nature and subtle size, perhaps because of their in-depth health insights. And while they may be one of, if not the, smallest piece of wearable tech, they offer big benefits.

When we say smart rings, most likely the Oura Ring springs to mind. Quite right: it was the first sleep and health tracking smart ring to launch, back in 2015. But it wasn’t until almost 10 years later that smart rings really started to take off, with the likes of Samsung and Ultrahuman creating their own versions. Today, everyone from the England football team and Prince Harry to Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston are fans – and undoubtedly you also know a slew of people in thrall to their own smart ring.

So what do smart rings actually do? The rings, which easily pass as normal jewellery thanks to their slimline designs in shiny golds and silvers or subtle, inoffensive blacks, measure a whole range of metrics. From daily steps to specific workouts such as running, gym sessions and cycling, they log your activity and provide analytics such as heart rate, heart rate variability and blood oxygen levels. They can also track sleep, including the number of hours and time spent in each stage of sleep (REM, deep sleep, etc) as well as its efficiency and quality.

Other insights can include body temperature, stress levels, active minutes and calories burnt, alongside recovery analyses providing ‘readiness’ scores with energy levels. Easy to sync to your smartphone, whether Android or iOS, usually via Bluetooth connectivity, smart rings are a seamless way to keep on top of your overall health and wellness alongside accomplishing fitness goals.

Ready to get your hands on a smart ring? Here are our favourites.
