In the ever-evolving world of beauty, trends constantly come and go, with innovative new launches and often short-lived fads seemingly appearing on a weekly basis. One skincare trend currently making waves, and proving to have lasting power, is peptides.
Small but mighty, this hardworking active ingredient is becoming increasingly common across the high-performance skincare market, thanks to its promises of hydration, nourishment, and to firm, smooth and lift the skin over time. The result? Healthier, younger-looking complexions that glow year round.
But what exactly are peptides, how do they work, and is this trend really worth the hype? We’ve got the lowdown on the powerhouse ingredient below, with expert insight from Dr Alexis Granite, consultant dermatologist and founder of Joonbyrd.
What are peptides?
“Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins,” explains Granite. “Our skin is composed of a number of structural proteins, including keratin, collagen and elastin.” These proteins form the foundation of healthy skin, providing structural support, strength, elasticity and resilience.
Although our skin naturally produces these peptides, factors such as age can slow the production process down, leading to reduced elasticity and visible signs of ageing, including fine lines, wrinkles, and a lacklustre complexion. A simple, non-invasive fix? Peptide skincare products.
“Because of their small size, peptides are generally able to penetrate the skin effectively when used in topical preparations,” says Granite. Once absorbed, they “act as messengers, signalling skin and hair cells to perform essential functions,” such as repair, renewal and regeneration.

What are the benefits of using peptides in skincare?
Peptides are generally well tolerated and suitable for most skin types, whether that’s sensitive, dry, oily or reactive, making them a highly versatile and universally beneficial skincare ingredient. Found in a wide range of formulas and products, they offer multiple benefits to ensure skin is well hydrated, deeply nourished and youthfully radiant.
“Peptides help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, slow the signs of skin ageing, improve skin firmness and resilience, support the skin barrier, soothe irritation and inflammation and can improve wound healing, breakouts and pigmentation,” explains Granite.
By stimulating collagen and elastin production, peptides help smooth skin texture, improve firmness and restore a plumper, younger-looking appearance, combating signs of ageing and enhancing natural glow. They also play a key role in strengthening the skin barrier, boosting hydration and easing any swelling, redness or signs of breakouts. Multifunctional and multi-beneficial, peptides may be small in size, but they deliver powerful results.
What peptide skincare products should I use?
Peptides can be found in a variety of skincare products, but “most typically in leave-ins such as serums and moisturisers,” says Granite. Apply serums (lightweight but potent formulas) after cleansing in the mornings and at night, before massaging in a moisturiser to deeply hydrate, nourish, and smooth the skin.
How long does it take to see results from using peptide products?
“A boost in hydration and radiance may be almost immediate, but improvements in tone, texture and skin firmness will take at least six to eight weeks,” explains Granite.
