The AW24 beauty trends to know now
From metallics on the eyes to red hues on the lips, here are the beauty trends you should be sporting this season
A whirlwind of catwalks and shows at fashion month always brings with it an abundance of new trends – and not just when it comes to clothes. Enlisting the world’s best makeup artists and hair stylists to give their models the glam treatment, the high fashion runways are also the first place to look if you want to know what’s hot in the world of beauty. Not sure where to start when it comes to AW24 beauty trends? We’re here to help. From perfectly-trimmed long bobs and big bouncy blow outs, to bold lips and metallic eyes, here are the must-see makeup and hair looks from the likes of Harris Reed, Dior, 16Arlington, Molly Goddard and more – plus tips on how you can perfect them at home.
The Lob
Galvan London
Chanel
A fan favourite among supermodels Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, as well as British fashion designer Victoria Beckham, the ‘lob’ – otherwise known as the long bob – is back. Spotted at Marni, Stella McCartney, Fendi and Galvan London in February, the lob is a perfect solution for those looking to grow out the bob cuts of spring/summer, allowing you to add in more texture and shape in the hopes of embracing long lengths again in early 2025. “The lob is extremely versatile,” says Andrey Andreev, stylist at Covent Garden-based salon Ena. “It can be kept one-length to give the appearance of weight and thickness, or worn with lots of layers to give more movement. It also looks amazing with different fringes, worn smooth and sleek, flicked out, wavy or curly – the possibilities are endless but it’s a very practical style at the same time.
“In terms of styling, the key to keeping the lob looking on point is condition. It works perfectly with an effortless finish, so I recommend using light conditioning products that will support natural movement. Personally, I love Davines Reinforcing Bodifying Fluid, which transforms into a soft mousse and is heat protective, so perfect for adding to the hair before drying.”
Bold lips
Bally
Molly Goddard
Red for autumn? Groundbreaking. But according to the AW24 catwalks, it actually is. While burgundy is this season’s hero hue, makeup artists at JW Anderson, Moschino, Khaite and Molly Goddard also took note and tapped into a palette of purple, burgundy, ruby red and magenta pink tones on the lips. Lisa Eldridge, lead MUA at Molly Goddard’s AW24 show, wrote on Instagram post-show: “I loved creating this fresh, cool beauty moment – complete with a scandalously lived-in, kissed-on, blurred lip, that did more than suggest its wearer had been up all night and stole away in the early hours of the morning.”
Metallic moments
Chet Lo
Harris Reed
Harris Reed instructed the beauty nous of Sofia Tilbury for his spell-binding AW24 collection – and ensured it wasn’t only the clothes that brought the drama. Showed in the halls of the Tate Britain, Reed’s eye-catching silhouettes and blooming prints were complemented by shimmering looks, with Tilbury and her team “inspired by his world of Victoriana and paper dolls, which we captured in the wide silver and gold eyes, doll-like lips and rosy cheeks.” The razzle-dazzle didn’t stop there, with Chet Lo’s silver-foiled tears at LFW and models at Christian Siriano sporting gold accents in New York. Perfect for party season, go all out with this look on the eyes or opt for a shimmery lip and pigmented highlighter on a clean base for a pared-back twist.
In the pink
Dior
Harris Reed
Dior make up artist Peter Philips took a leaf out of historic designer Marc Bohan’s book in order to celebrate his favourite colour on the AW24 catwalk: pink. Creating a bold inner-eye look with a flash of fluorescent fuchsia, the acclaimed image director worked alongside Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri to subtly reference the signature Miss Dior hue while emboldening the typically darker autumn/winter wardrobe.
For those who prefer something slightly more subtle that still ticks the pink boxes, copy the softer hues spotted at Valentino, Michael Kors and Casablanca on the cheeks and lips. Susan Fang looked to Grace Ellington to emulate English rose skin with a smattering of freckles, while Chloé creative director Chemena Kamali enlisted Aaron de Mey to create radiant looks in New York with a selection of Sisley Paris products.
Bouncy blow outs
Frolov
Versace
Will we ever tire of a bouncy blow dry? Probably not – and we’re not complaining. While the catwalks saw plenty of minimalist looks at Tommy Hilfiger and 16Arlington, the likes of Alice + Olivia and Christian Cowan opted for fuller, bouncier hair styles at New York Fashion Week. Cowan tasked stylist Justine Marjan and her team with the job of curling 35 wigs before the show, while Marc Jacobs took things one step further with his array of back-combed bouffants. “This look is all about XXL volume but also healthy, shiny, smooth finishes are vital for nailing the blowout. The modern spin is to have a curve or kick through the mid-lengths of your hair rather than a curl at the ends, like in the ‘90s. The ends should be kept straighter or with a slight bend,” says Andreev.
“No matter your hair length, prep is key – begin by focusing on condition and heat protection. If you’ve got longer, thicker hair, your next step is to rough dry with a hairdryer, those with shorter, finer hair, can just go straight in with a heated brush. My top tip here is to take the time to work through the hair with the heated brush in small sections. It’ll take longer but it’ll give you a much smoother, seamless finish and better longevity to the blow-dry – it’s well worth it for that wow factor!”
