For the 73rd annual British Academy Film Awards in London, guests were encouraged to “dress sustainably” by either re-wearing or hiring a pre-owned ensemble. The request for more sustainable fashion choices is part of the British Academy's efforts to become “carbon neutral”, which also includes a ban on single-use plastic and a new "green" carpet created using recycled materials.

Adhering to the second-time-around dress code, the Duchess of Cambridge opted for a custom Alexander McQueen gown, previously worn to attend a dinner with the King and Queen of Malaysia during a tour of Southeast Asia in 2013. Glittering gold embroidery was designed to mirror the shape of hibiscus, the official flower of Malaysia.

While dresses were decidedly more modest than previous seasons, there was still a serious frosting of diamonds on the red carpet. The Duchess of Cambridge wore a Van Cleef & Arpels necklace and matching earrings, with Jimmy Choo heels and an Anya Hindmarch clutch.

Charlize Theron debuted the new Tiffany T1 High Jewellery choker, which intricately sets pavé diamonds in a striking honeycomb pattern. Theron was nominated for Leading Actress for her portrayal of Megyn Kelly in Bombshell, which recounts the true story of the women that ousted Fox News CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment.

Gillian Anderson, everybody’s favourite therapist and mum in Netflix’s coming-of-age comedy Sex Education, also wore Tiffany jewels, along with Florence Pugh, Jodie Turner-Smith and Vanessa Kirby.

Renée Zellweger picked up the award for Leading Actress in a candy pink column dress by Prada, redolent of the iconic satin gown worn by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The American actress was recognised for her performance in Judy, which depicts the final chapter in singer Judy Garland's life.

Margot Robbie, a seasoned Chanel ambassador, opted for a timeless black dress and Camellia earrings by the French fashion house, while Scarlett Johanssen oozed glamour in a sequin-covered custom Versace dress, topped by jewellery from Greek designer Nikos Koulis.
