If your New Year’s resolution is to travel more, make Zurich top of your list. The heartbeat of Switzerland, brimming with diverse culture, unique character and thrilling exploration opportunities, this alpine hub has something for every curious traveller. Hike in woodland, swim in the lake, spend the evening in a lively neighbourhood square – the city combines modern urban lifestyle with serene nature for the perfect European getaway.

Located in the north of the country, surrounding the aqua blue waters of Lake Zurich and with the magnificent snowy Alps on the horizon, the setting itself is plenty to write home about. As Switzerland’s largest city, however, Zurich is also a melting pot of culture, with museums, restaurants, boutiques and a thriving nightlife scene all set amidst the enchanting natural beauty of the Swiss landscape.

Altstadt, Zurich

There are 12 neighbourhoods sprawled across the city, each with their own unique charm, from the art quarter to the gastronomic area to city centre sightseeing. Start in the Old Town of Altstadt and discover the city’s history, wandering around cobbled streets, courtyards and luscious gardens. Explore the iconic landmarks, including the Kunsthaus art museum (filled with contemporary artwork as well as significant paintings by the likes of Picasso and Monet) and the Fraumünster stained-glass windowed church, before picking up some traditional bites and delicacies like Zürich Geschnetzeltes and Luxemburgerli in the Food Trend District.

Zürich, General View

A recreational city, Zurich is as much a playground for the active traveller as it is for those needing some R&R. Head to the shore of the lake and discover all sorts of activities to get stuck into. Take a dive into Lake Zurich’s gin-clear water – there are more than 30 waterside swimming spots to dip from year-round, whatever the weather. Alternatively stay atop the lake with watersports including rowing, paddle boarding, kayaking and wakeboarding (water babies will be in their element).

Elsewhere, check out the running, hiking and cycling routes spread across the city too. From forest and tarmac trails to sprint around and picturesque cycling paths, such as the famous Route 66 along Lake Zurich, to wonderful walking excursions that take you into the nearby mountains, it’s the best way to see the city. Mountain lovers can reach Mt. Rigi and Mt. Pilatus in just an hour for hiking, climbing and skiing, while central Switzerland is also easily accessible.

Ready from some mindful hours and a restful break? Lean into Zurich’s more peaceful side. Enjoy sun salutations with the varied yoga classes available across the city, from rooftop sessions at Alma Hotel to outdoor practices at Rieterpark, the preserved 19th century landscaped park just steps away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Breathe in and take a break in the natural setting, surrounded by greenery and birdsong, or why not take your downward dogs to the next level and try SUP yoga at Badi Enge Lido on balmy summer evenings?

Post-exercise there’s hot steam baths and saunas to recline into. Top spots include the sauna boat on Lake Zurich – play captain while enhancing your wellbeing in a stunning waterside setting – while Stadtoase, a health centre on the edge of the city boasts saunas, meditation sessions and a sweat hut with massages to help you tap into mind, body and soul. Don’t miss Hürlimannbad & Spa for its luxurious thermal baths and Roman-Irish spa; nestled in the old stone vaults of a former brewery, its rooftop pool promises majestic views. Definitely one for the bucket list.

Bahnhofstrasse

For those keen to venture beyond Zurich, there are plenty of day trips and excursions available to the surrounding areas. Easily accessible from Zurich station, head into the Swiss Alps to hike famous mountains Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau as well as mounts Titlis, Rigi or Pilatus, while nearby towns and cities such as Rapperswil, Lucerne and Bern are also well worth checking out. Thanks to the Zürich card city travel pass, travel doesn’t get much easier in Zurich. Covering unlimited second class travel on public transport (tram, bus, train, boat, funicular and cable car) all around the city and the surrounding region, the card is your ticket to uncover the alpine destination.
