The best adults-only hotels in the Maldives

Perfect for honeymoons and hideaways, these adults-only resorts promise uninterrupted tranquility in one of the world’s most exclusive destinations

For many, the last thing you want to hear after you’ve stepped off a 10-hour flight from London (and then maybe a 40-minute seaplane, depending on where you’re staying in the Maldives), is the family in the neighbouring villa juggling two under two, trying to calm down a screaming child, or battling with loud video games and music. Not the peace and quiet you were hoping for, is it?

Enter the Maldives’ adults-only hotels, where only over-18s are permitted and quieter, child-free environments are a USP. With many doubling as honeymoon or wedding destinations, don’t be surprised to find these stays are designed solely around couples looking to spend quality time together in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Fancy a getaway for two? Step right this way.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, South Ari Atoll

Set within the peaceful serenity of the Indian Ocean, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is split across two remote islands, one of which is dedicated to adults. On Rangali Island (as opposed to the family friendly Rangalifinolhu Island), couples can retreat to romantic thatch-roof villas set on stilts above the azure waters, each of which features private outdoor pools, ocean-facing bathtubs and glass-panelled flooring revealing tropical fish swimming below. For the ultimate romantic experience, book the Muraka: a first-of-its-kind sprawling residence featuring a master suite submerged 17ft underwater where guests can rest their heads while shoals of colourful fish swim overhead.

The hotel is also home to 12 different dining experiences including the world’s first undersea restaurant, Ithaa, featuring creative fusion dishes and panoramic coral garden views that guarantee reef shark sightings. Bespoke itineraries include diving with whale sharks, swimming with manta rays, sunset dolphin sailings, coral planting led by the hotel’s on-site marine biologist and, last but not least, endless opportunities to unwind and relax at the Spa Retreat.

From £460 per night.

Hurawalhi Island Resort, Lhaviyani Atoll

The Lhaviyani Atoll is home to 54 islands, only four of which are inhabited, with one being home to the gorgeous Hurawalhi Island Resort: a 90-key, adults-only escape. The sister property to the five-star, family-friendly Kudadoo Private Island, and just a few minutes away by speedboat, this atoll is perfect for those who want to discover underwater wildlife, boasting 50 sites hosting the Maldives’ largest population of turtles and manta rays.

The crown jewel of the resort is the 5.8 Undersea restaurant, the world’s largest all-glass restaurant, named after the number of metres it sits under the sea. If you’d rather keep your head above water, choose from a further two restaurants and two bars – but for the ultimate romantic experience, we recommend booking the Champagne Pavilion. Tucked away on the island’s westernmost locale, this is where sundowners get taken to new heights as dolphins and manta rays come out to play.

From £1,290 per night.

Oblu Select Lobigili, North Malé Atoll

Translated as ‘love island’ from the native language of Dhivehi, Oblu Select Lobigili is easily one of the most romantic resorts in the Maldives. Part of the Colours of Oblu portfolio, which comprises four hotels across the archipelago, this is the group’s only adults-only hotel in the Maldives. Fringing white-powder beaches and suspended over a sparkling turquoise lagoon are 68 stylishly designed villas, where private pools and uninterrupted views come as standard. The all-inclusive-style Lobi Plan grants guests access to a la carte dining at Ylang Ylang and local snacks at the Swing Bar, as well as specialty dining at the underwater restaurant Only Blu and informal but indulgent food truck, Gaadiya 17.

Can’t sit still? Luckily for you, Oblu offers complimentary snorkelling, paddle boards and kayaks for your entire stay. Guided diving tours of some of the best snorkelling sites in the North Malé Atoll are just a short boat trip away, while the rich house reef can be accessed via a short swim from the eastern shore. Finally, you won’t be disappointed at the Ele|Na spa, offering a range of wellness treatments inspired by nature and designed to nourish the mind and body.

From £700 per night.

Komandoo Maldives Island Resort, Lhaviyani Atoll

Komandoo Maldives Island Resort adults-only hotels Maldives

Dubbed the leading adults-only resort in the Maldives, and one of the most romantic hotels in Asia, Komandoo ensures guests won’t have to lift a finger throughout their stay. Pick from an array of accommodation, ranging from the stand-out ocean jacuzzi water villas, built on stilts over the lagoon and boasting spectacular sunrise and sunset views, to the beach villas: spacious retreats discreetly peppered across the shoreline, offering a cosy veranda from which to take in the sound of waves lapping noon ‘til night.

Rejuvenate at the award-winning Duniye Spa, where expert Thai, Indian and Balinese therapists deliver healing treatments inspired by ancient wellness rituals. Foodies have the choice of three restaurants, but to make this a truly memorable stay, we recommend tapping into the nous of the concierge team, who can create candlelit dinners under the stars, a beach barbecue feast or bring lavish dining to the comfort of your villa. The choice is yours…

From £945 per night.

Anantara Veli Maldives Resort, South Malé Atoll

It’s not unusual for revered hotel brands to have more than one outpost in the Maldives – and Anantara is no exception. The Thai hotelier has three properties spanning the north and south atolls, Veli, however, is its sole adults-only hotels in the Maldives. Ideal for both honeymoons and romantic getaways, the resort comprises 67 villas, spanning overwater, ocean, and beach locales, and is just 30 minutes away from Malé International Airport.

So, what to do? If picture-perfect Maldivian living – think lagoon-side lounging, guaranteed sunshine and endless moments of calm and quiet – isn’t enough, practice your swing at the golf studio, take to the waves on a surfboard or dive with nurse sharks on snorkelling tours. Enjoy Indian food at Cumin, Thai specialties at Baan Huraa and modern Japanese dishes at Origami – plus, as this is the sister property to adjacent family-friendly resort Anantara Dhigu, guests are encouraged to make the most of both hotels’ facilities during their stay, meaning there’s a further four restaurants at your disposal. Now that’s what we call a win-win.

From £1,200 per night.
