According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2020 is The Year of the Gold Rat. The first animal of the zodiac, the legend goes that the Jade Emperor summoned all the animals to his palace to denote each to a calendar sign. The rat woke up early to get a head start and on the way he encountered the ox, who ran much faster. The rat hitched a ride and when they arrived, sneaked ahead of the ox to become the first animal at the gathering.
Traditionally observed over 15 days, China Tang has condensed this phenomenal celebration into two days with a feast more worthy of an ox than a rat. Head Chef Chong Choi Fong has designed an eight-course banquet menu, featuring a range of opulent Chinese New Year specials. These include the likes of dragon whisker langoustine, steamed grouper wrapped in lotus leaf and and e-fu noodles with truffle and wild mushroooms. As one would expect, a special cocktail has also been created for the celebrations: Li Bai – a delicate but captivating cocktail made with premium Fenchew, hibiscus syrup, electric bitter, dry curacao and maraschino.
Be ushered into a cocooned oasis of spring blossoms and Chinese lanterns and marvel at the quintessential Lion Dance, a must for any Chinese New Year celebration. It's best to make sure you're first through the hallowed doors of China Tang - our furry friend would do the same.
The Chinese New Year Banquet Menu is priced at £128 per person on pre-order only, and runs on the 24th and 25th January. However, the special dishes are available for a two-week period from dinner on Friday 24th January until Sunday 8th February and can be ordered on arrival.
