What is mid-strength drinking?

This emerging trend is changing the way we drink

If you were out and about in London last weekend you may have seen a lively crowd marching from St Paul’s to the South Bank, holding banners, dancing to the tunes of a brass band and, at their final destination, clinking cans of beer. From that description, you have no doubt already drawn your own conclusions as to what may have brought this group together – I can confirm, you’re wrong.

Put your pre-conceptions to one side because, no, this wasn’t an inebriated parade weaving its way through London – in fact, quite the opposite. On 28 February 2026, Mid-Strength March returned for its second year to raise awareness of the fast-growing mid-strength drinks category. Created for people looking for new ways to enjoy drinking without overdoing it, the event encouraged drinkers to explore the sweet spot between full-strength and alcohol-free drinks.

Once considered niche, the term ‘mid-strength’ has rapidly entered mainstream conversation, as more people look for balance, intention and flexibility in how they drink. Offering around half the alcohol of traditional equivalents, the category delivers on all the flavour, quality and experience, while allowing drinkers greater control and reduced chance of hangovers.

According to research by KAM Insight, 50 per cent of consumers would prefer two mid-strength drinks over one full-strength option when going for ‘just one’ at the pub. Add to this the fact that 55 per cent of consumers are eager to explore mid-strength drinks as an alternative to full-strength alcohol, it’s not just a passing fad. It’s young people that seem to be spearheading the movement too, with 71 per cent of 25-34 year olds on board with discovering more balanced ways to drink.

So, what are the benefits? We spoke to the experts to find out why this movement is growing, and the best brands to sample at home.

What are the benefits of mid-strength drinking?

We’ve all seen the click-baity headlines promising that a glass of red wine per night actually has health benefits (unconfirmed) and beer isn’t that bad for you (also unconfirmed) – but the mid-strength movement isn’t about that. It’s about creating a more considered drinking culture, perfect for those moments when you want to unwind but don’t want the headache the next day, or are being mindful of your sugar or calorie intake but don’t want to sacrifice toasting a friend’s birthday.

Laura Willoughby, founder of Club Soda and the UK’s leading expert in low, no and mid-strength alcohol drinks, says: “Ultimately, moderation does not have to be a binary choice between drinking and not drinking. The goal is to encourage a more intentional drinking culture – one where we pay attention to what we drink, not just when we choose to abstain from alcohol, but also when we choose to enjoy it.”

That’s not to say it doesn’t have health benefits. Alcohol acts as a diuretic, causing water loss and dehydration, but beers brewed to under 2.8 per cent ABV do not affect the body’s diuretic limit because the water you take in matches the water lost. The result? Less dehydration and, thus, less risk of a hangover. Higher ABV drinks, meanwhile, can also slow recovery by impairing protein synthesis and disrupting sleep cycles, particularly REM sleep which is essential for recovery.

Plus, mid-strength drinks generally have 20 to 50 fewer calories per serving compared to full-strength (4.5-5 per cent ABV) drinks, and therefore have benefits for weight management, liver function and ultimately lean into the idea of ‘drinking better’.

6Percent Sauvignon Blanc

6Percent is a mid-strength wine brand produced in Bordeaux and co-founded by Russell and Gabriella Lamb. As wine lovers, the couple were frustrated at being restricted by the high alcohol volume of wine and unsatisfied with alcohol-free wine alternatives. Working with former Diageo executive, Jason Sennitt, they set out to use well loved grape varietals and partnered with producers in arguably the best wine region in the world, Bordeaux.

Bursting with zesty lemon, fresh gooseberry and crisp apple, 6Percent’s sauvignon blanc is sweeter than its higher ABV counterparts but no less refreshing, complemented by a subtle minerality. It left me wanting more – made all the sweeter when the possibility of a headache is reduced.

Small Beer Selection Box

Non-alcoholic beers have been a mainstay in the market for years, but Small Beer taps into the mid-strength movement with its 2- 2.8 per cent ABV brews. As London’s only B Corp brewery, and the world’s first dedicated mid-strength brewery, beers are produced via traditional methods – using malted barley, oats, rye, and wheat, alongside water, hops and yeast – and spend a minimum of six weeks lagering in vessel to give them flavour. No alcohol is removed but the process is carefully managed so each beer only reaches a mid-strength.

The collection includes a classic lager and IPA, as well as hazy, amber, pale and blanche varieties. Opt for the Selection Box to enjoy a mixed case of 10 beers.

Future Château Sparkling White Wine

Future Château founder Tom Benn is a self-proclaimed wine obsessive, but even he’d admit that it can be a bit too strong. This problem led him to dedicate five years of his life, working across three continents, to invent a method for producing premium five per cent ABV wines that taste every bit as good as full strength. From syrah grenache to sauvignon vermentino, each glass carries two-thirds less alcohol and calories, but all the flavour, aroma and mouthfeel of classic wine.

Our top pick? The new five per cent sparkling is the wine for drawn out celebrations. Whether it’s a dinner with loved ones or an all-night affair, this fresh, bright and balanced bottle of bubbles offers crisp citrus notes, fine bubbles, and a dry, champagne-style finish. Crafted with 100 per cent premium grapes and via traditional winemaking methods, you would never know this isn’t the real deal.
