Sundowners: The best summer terraces and pop-up bars in London
From charming cobbled courtyards to tucked-away terraces, here’s where to grab a tipple in the sunshine this summer
Sun’s out, and in the world of food and drink, that means it’s time to go all-out on terraces. With many partnering with famous champagne and wine maisons, launching a brand new cocktail list, or even promising to transport guests to idyllic climes, London’s best terraces have been completely overhauled for summer – so what better excuse to go out and enjoy them? You’ll find no rooftops here (we’ve covered that already), but chic cobbled courtyards and Parisian-style street-side spots that will cater for post-work drinks, casual catch-ups and romantic rendezvous alike. Here are the best summer terraces to book in London.
La Môme at The Berkeley, Knightsbridge
Take a trip to the Côte d’Azur without even needing to leave London thanks to the gorgeous La Môme terrace at The Berkeley. Providing a sun-drenched haven just moments from Knightsbridge station, this leafy 30-seat terrace has been adorned with red and white furnishings, in keeping with the interiors inside the expansive golden ground-floor restaurant that was designed by award-winning interior architect Samy Chams and only opened in January this year.
La Môme’s menu celebrates the vibrant flavours of Provence, using the finest seasonal ingredients. Lunch begins with warm, freshly-baked bread served alongside lashings of European olive oil and fragrant thyme which is snipped off the plant tableside. The menu doesn’t follow a traditional three-course format but is split into sharers, salads, pastas, meat and fish before a selection of sides (so there is an impressive array to choose from). I’d seriously recommend the homemade and smoked cod tarama topped with vibrant orange trout roe and served with warm blinis, before moving onto decadent, rich pastas including the black truffle macaroni and veal tagliatelle. Signatures are in the form of Black Angus tagliata and flame-grilled octopus alla Luciana, which are also prepared tableside to add to the theatrics.
The cocktail list also embraces the joie de vivre of the Riviera, encompassing serves of the Louis Julian with notes of peach, elderflower, rose and lemon topped up with bubbles and the Last Tango in Paris: think mango mezcal, bergamot and mandarin soda and chamomile foam. One of my favourite sips for summer, however, has to be the simple but effective La Môme moineau, featuring vodka, raspberries, Chambord and champagne. Oh, and don’t forget to indulge in the tiramisu – you certainly won’t regret it.

Dovetale, Mayfair
Dovetale, the elegant restaurant in 1 Hotel Mayfair by acclaimed chef Tom Sellers, has collaborated with tequila brand Casamigos to bring a taste of sun-drenched Montauk to Mayfair via an array of American-inspired country club classics and margaritas. Just steps from Green Park, the new terrace is a hidden oasis tucked along Dover Yard, adorned with open wood walls, coastal furnishings and a fireplace (ready to roar when London’s inclement weather sets in).
Food also nods to the coast with seafood dishes of fresh oysters, tuna tartare gazpacho and Scottish lobster roll, while timeless summer flavours feature across plates of grilled peaches with burrata, wagyu cheeseburger with smoked pickles and buttermilk fried chicken sandwich with avocado and honey hot sauce – this is comfort food at its finest. To wash it down, guests will also be invited to build their own frozen margaritas, served from the signature Dovetale Knickerbocker Glory trolley and featuring flavours of strawberry, apricot and lime. See you in the queue.

Battuta at Four Seasons Hotel at Park Lane, Mayfair
Having only opened earlier this month, Battuta has already made a name for itself on London’s summer dining scene. A vibrant new pop-up from the world’s most Michelin-decorated chef, Yannick Alléno, and occupying the al fresco terrace next to Pavyllon restaurant at Four Seasons Park Lane, the new restaurant brings a bold, sun-drenched menu of generous sharing plates inspired by the flavours of the Middle East, Asia and North Africa.
Named after the legendary 14th-century explorer Ibn Battuta, the menu pays tribute to his spirit of adventure while championing sustainably sourced, seasonal ingredients with an emphasis on grilled meats and seafood. Pick from sharing small plates and heartier mains, with highlights including quite simply the best prawn toast I’ve ever had with chilli mayonnaise, crispy flat chicken dumplings, chicken shawarma bao and a selection of breads and dips. Save room for larger plates of the fruity Moroccan lamb tagine and huge tiger prawns cooked in red chermoula sauce, black garlic, parsley. Open until the end of September, I’d recommend reserving your table sooner rather than later.
