From great winter outerwear to the T-shirt that will change the way you think about T-shirts, here's everything that's been bringing Team LL joy this January

Let’s face it: January is no-one’s favourite time of year. Unless you happen to be sunning yourself in the Caribbean or living it up on the slopes in Courchevel, it is a month during which to hunker down and get through it. Which isn’t to say it’s all been doom and gloom over at Luxury London HQ. From sun-drenched adventures Down Under to the outerwear that has made us actively look forward to rainy days, here’s everything Team Luxury London has been loving this month.

The sweater: Les Cent Ciels Nyx Cashmere Jumper

Now that party dresses have been packed away for another year, January and February, in my opinion, are all about understated, elegant dressing. In that spirit, I’ve been investing in elevated basics. One piece I’ve been consistently drawn to throughout the month is Les Cent Ciels’ sumptuously soft jumper. Crafted from pure cashmere and cut in a slouchy silhouette, the taupe hue pairs brilliantly with dark denim, loafers and an oversized coat. Pulling together an outfit for work or weekends has never been so easy.

The homeware: LSA Gio glasses

My birthday is this month, which means I never partake in Dry January. What’s fun about being stone-cold sober during the first four weeks of the year, anyway? Regardless, I will be toasting the new year ahead with LSA’s Gio champagne and cocktail glasses. Perfect for both celebratory fizz and espresso martinis – which happen to be my two favourite tipples – these look as pretty in your hand as they do in your cabinet.

The sunscreen: P20 Hyperpigmentation Defence

I’m off on holiday this month (yes, I’m feeling smug) and will happily admit I am not only SPF obsessed, but also seriously fussy about it. As a fair-skinned redhead, I have gone through more than my fair share of suncream in my time and will only pack products that are 1) high protection (I don’t mess about with factor 30), 2) suitable for sensitive skin and, 3) don’t feel greasy. P20 Hyperpigmentation Defence ticks all the boxes and then some, working to visibly reduce dark spots and tackle ageing caused by the sun. Plus, it’s suitable to wear under makeup so I’ve been sporting it even on the greyest days in the city. I told you I was obsessed…

The gym: Psycle London Bridge

psycle london bridge

I’ll give pretty much any sport or workout a try – unless it involves two wheels. I still have scars from the time I crashed a moped at Silverstone. I’ve fallen off jet skis no fewer than five times; once into a Norwegian fjord in April, which is the kind of cold you don’t forget in a hurry. Hold dancer’s pose in a yoga class? No problem. Stay atop pretty much anything bipedal? No chance. Accordingly, I had never stepped foot inside a Psycle spin studio until I discovered its Oxford Circus outpost also offered Reformer Pilates classes. With its clubby vibe, great playlists and welcoming instructors, I was instantly sold. So when I found out a new branch will be opening just around the corner from our London Bridge office next week, offering the brand’s first Megaformer (Lagree) classes, you best believe I plan to be first through the door.

The pyjamas: Stripe & Stare brushed heart pyjamas

I’ve never been one for Valentine’s Day. Much to my husband’s relief I can think of nothing worse than spending an evening crammed into a restaurant full of two tops eating overpriced steak simply because it happens to be the middle of February. I am, however, not a total killjoy, so this year I will partake in the festivities via the medium of pyjamas – specifically these from Stripe & Stare’s Valentine’s capsule. Cosy, cute and feel good thanks to the brand’s policy of planting a tree for every order, they’re the perfect partner to a romantic night in on the sofa, don’t you agree?

The outerwear: Maje embroidered coat

The only thing guaranteed to make a cold, grey January day more palatable? A great new coat. Warm and well made, I pretty much always have a piece of Maje outerwear in my rotation and this winter my top pick is this embroidered double-faced coat. Rendered in this season’s trending chocolate hue, its streamlined silhouette and bracelet sleeves are super flattering while the detachable scarf offers the kind of effortless elegance that, let’s face it, we’re all constantly striving for. Better yet, it’s currently 50 per cent off.

The menswear: The (almost) return of T-shirt season

With January almost done, can anyone else feel it in the air? Spring. And, most happily of all, the imminent reopening of the smart T-shirt drawer (the manky ones get worn year-round, under merino jumpers and cashmere rollnecks). This year, I have more reason than normal to welcome the mercury sailing into double digits. Thanks to the very generous people at Sunspel, I’ve recently come into possession of a particularly smart smart T-shirt.

Nottingham’s Sunspel didn’t invent the T-shirt. Most fashion folk concur that the collar-less crew-neck evolved from undershirts worn by the US Navy during the Second World War. Sunspel was, nonetheless, among the first to commercialise lightweight, short-sleeved cotton shirts – as far back as 1908, its archives show – helping lay down the characteristics of what we know as the T-shirt today.

The brand’s got a swanky flagship on Jermyn Street, where, and only there, they’ll measure you up for a bespoke T-shirt. Choose your style, cut, colour, fabric, length and detailing – a chest pocket perhaps, a monogram, if that’s your thing – and four weeks later your handmade T-shirt will be on its way from the company’s factory in Long Eaton. Whenever I’d conducted a mental cost-benefit analysis on a bespoke T-shirt in the past, the cost had always outweighed the imaginary gains. How much better-fitting could a personalised T-shirt be? How much taller could it make you feel? At least a foot, it turns out.

The restaurant: The return of Simpson’s (sort of)

cloth cornhill

Simpson’s Tavern, the famous City chophouse, went merrily along for 265 years before, in 2022, a Bermuda-based investment company bought the lease and pulled the plug. Prior to Dad and I making it our Christmas tradition, former patrons included Charles Dickens, Samuel Johnson, William Thackeray, Benjamin Disraeli, Robert Peel, Charles Lamb and, a little more recently, Stephen Fry, Michael Caine and John Cleese (although not at the same time, sadly).

The last time I walked past the Grade II-listed building, its doors were padlocked and its windows smashed. Good news, of a kind, is that the restaurant will be reopening soon, albeit by a different team (the group behind Smithfield restaurant Cloth) and with a different name above the door (‘Cloth Cornhill’; ‘Simpson’s’ still mired in legal wranglings). The steaks and pies and sausages will make a welcome return, the new owners have promised. Let’s hope they extend an invitation to the former staff, too – for they were as much Simpson’s as the stewed cheese.

The destination: Sydney

sydney harbour

I rang in 2026 in Sydney, and, having long been a bucket list dream to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks from Harbour Bridge, boy, it did not disappoint. From touchdown after 26 hours airborne, journeying from bitter British winter into peak hot Aussie summertime, to take off two weeks later, every day was a pinch-me moment – blue skies, clear water, glorious mountains, golden sun, sand and Aperols. A highlight? Stepping aboard the Spirit of Migloo with Journey Beyond Cruises to experience the city by boat while enjoying an indulgent three-course dinner, accompanied by the most magnificent sunset. It’s safe to say, I’ll be returning to the land Down Under, quick sharp.

The trainers: Asics Novablast 5

Post-Christmas and a holiday of pure indulgence, it was time to let my New Year’s resolutions kick in. Back to running and drinking more mindfully (tricky, with a year of 30ths and weddings, but I’ll try). To help, I treated myself to a new pair of trainers. I’ve always been an Asics girl (I ran the London Marathon last year in a pair and could not fault them), and I love pink, so I couldn’t resist the new Novablasts. Of course, there are plenty of other colours for the less Barbie-inclined, but all with the same bounce, support and speed.

The knitwear: Sheep Inc. and Rails

I’m most certainly not a cold weather fan, but while the winter weather still lingers, I may as well dress the part – and I’m currently loving a good cardigan. Cosy but chic, versatile and effortlessly elegant, they’re always a winner. My eyes are on Sheep Inc.’s vibrant Valentine’s red knit, and Rails’ Mer ivory iteration, complete with a feminine lace trim. C'est beau.
