The must-see looks from the Met Gala 2025 red carpet

05 May 2025 | Updated on: 07 May 2025 | By Zoe Gunn

It's time to blur the lines between fashion and fancy dress: the Met Gala is back

Don your best couture, fashion’s biggest night out on the town is here. The first Monday in May has arrived which means just one thing: the Met Gala 2025 is about to begin.

As ever, tonight’s festivities are in aid of the Costume Institute at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and will be themed around its blockbuster spring exhibition which, for 2025, is Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Ostensibly a celebration of menswear as created and worn by Black men, it’s a good fashion-centric theme which, unlike in years past, is unlikely to tip into the realm of straight up fancy dress (who can forget Rihanna as the Pope for Heavenly Bodies or Zendaya as Cinderella (Camp: Notes on Fashion)).

However, perhaps with some of the night’s biggest spenders in mind (a table for ten costs around $350,000 and there’s certainly no guarantee that the major luxury houses able to afford the price tag have strong connections to black style), the official Met Gala dresscode is ‘Tailored For You’ – which certainly offers plenty in terms of leeway.

Which doesn’t mean we’re not expecting big things. Joining Vogue’s Anna Wintour as this evening’s hosts are erstwhile musician and current creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear, Pharell Williams, F1 style maven Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, LeBron James and my current frontrunner for best dressed man of the year, Colman Domingo. On your bingo card for the evening should be references to influential Black designers past and present (think Off-White’s Virgil Abloh, Savile Row’s Ozwald Boateng, Dapper Dan and Stephen Burrows), call backs to important eras for the black community (The Windrush Generation, the Civil Rights Movement) and Black style icons (if we don’t see at least a little Sammy Davis Jr cosplay I’ll eat my sharkskin suit).

So who understood the assignment and who just put on a black suit and called it a day? Join me as I bring you all the must-see looks from the Met Gala 2025 live.

Rihanna in Marc Jacobs

Leave it to RiRi to use an occasion like the Met Gala to announce her third pregnancy. Arriving fashionably late (Anna Wintour has famously said she’s the only person she’ll allow to turn up past start time), the star managed to choose a cacophony of the night’s biggest hits – pinstripes, wide brimmed hats, cropped jackets – all of which served to emphasise her burgeoning bump. The ultimate plus one, some might say.

Demi Moore in Thom Browne

Pinstripes emerged as the real overarching theme of the Met Gala 2025 and, as ever, Demi Moore was bang on trend by coming as a literal neck tie. Her sculptural Thom Browne gown was designed to mimic the knot of a men’s tie and embroidered with 1.4 million beads representing around 7,600 hours of work. Get it girl.

Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga

Before we get to the gown, let’s talk about the hair – because that bit of sweeping fringe is about as long as Kidman’s locks gets these days. It’s a bold look but she absolutely pulls it off (and all the better to show off those jaw-dropping Cindy Chao earrings). The dress is a recreation of a 1950s Balenciaga couture gown with a few modern twists courtesy of outgoing creative director Demna and references to Eartha Kitt via Kidman’s stylist Jason Bolden. I would argue that the finished look is more Oscars than Met Gala but she looks great.

Lana Del Rey in Valentino

This is a gorgeous look, and certainly dramatic enough to warrant an outing at the Met Gala, but given it’s a straight-from-the-runway gown from Valentino’s Vertigineux haute couture collection, it isn’t quite clear what it has to do with the evening’s theme. A bit of customisation to at least nod to the dress code would have been nice but I’m a big fan of those pin curls though.

Kylie Jenner in Ferragamo

Dressing no fewer than four attendess at this year’s Met Gala, Ferragamo creative director Maximilian Davis blended his own heritage with the house’s long-standing association with Hollywood to create a series of silver screen-worthy looks. For Kylie Jenner, this meant an unusual wool herringbone gown broken up by a mesh corset (well, she is a Kardashian after all). It’s a brilliantly creative way to reference tailoring and the fit is impeccable but I find the slit both distracting and detrimental to the silhouette.

Lupita Nyong'o in Chanel

Given the theme, there were surpisingly few women in suits on the Met Gala 2025 red carpet – but those who did really hit the nail on the head. This powder blue Chanel looks stunning on Lupita Nyong'o with some speculating it was a nod to the icy look she wore when she picked up her Oscar in 2014. I can but applaud the confidence to reference yourself at the Met Gala. Beneath that cute little hat is an elaborate hairdo by Vernon François inspired by ancestral African hair traditions adding to a finished look that is joyful and vibrant.

André 3000 in Burberry

This was probably one of the most ‘Met Gala’ looks of the night in terms of sheer theatricality and was accompanied by a surprise new music drop from André 3000. Paying tribute to Black musicians’ influence on American music throughout history, the boiler suit was inspired by an image from the Burberry archive while the baby grand piano was custom made by Pink Sparrow. Let’s just hope he takes it off before dinner.

Zoe Saldana in Thom Browne

Zoe Saldana is Hollywood’s ultimate cool girl so it only makes sense that she should choose the sophisticate’s label of choice for the Met Gala. Thom Browne has long been known for its exquisite contemporary tailoring and this gown is absolutely one of my favourites of the night so far. Fully embroidered with sequins, save for the ‘pinstripe’ waistcoat which is actually constructed from clever pleats, and paired with Buccellati jewellery, the whole thing is oozing 1920s dandy glamour. Obsessed.

Anne Hathaway in Carolina Herrera

Speaking on the red (okay, blue) carpet, Hathaway said she had only one person in mind when deciding on her look for the evening: André Leon Talley. Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon worked with SCAD, home of Leon Talley’s personal archive, to create the look and the fabulous and famously opinionated fashion editor would undoubtedly have high praise of that perfectly tucked white shirt and jaw-dropping Bulgari necklace. I’m not enthralled by the hair and makeup choices (a touch too severe for the softness of the shirt to my eyes) but that skirt is killer.

Diana Ross in Evan Ross and Ugo Mozie

Move over children, this is how a real diva does it. It's been 22 years since Diana Ross last graced the Met Gala red carpet (and she still had to be convinced by her son to turn up this year) but she certainly hasn't held back. The entirely custom look, created by Ross, her son evan Ross and the Nigerian desigern Ugo Mozie featured an 18-foot train embroidered with the names of her children and grandchildren, a feathered hat, and a full sequin gown in reference to her days as a legend of the disco era.

Cardi B in Burberry

Cardi B and Burberry might not feel like the most natural of fits but, with the help of uber-stylist Law Roach, who styled all of Burberry’s Met Gala 2025 looks, somehow reimagining the singer as an Edwardian dandy just works. It’s English country house meets Harlem Renaissance and I’m a fan.

Gigi Hadid in Miu Miu

The Miu Miu team took inspiration from Zelda Wynn Valdes – a segregation era designer who created clothes for the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Maria Cole – for Gigi Hadid’s 1940s silver screen starlet vibes. It’s a stunning look and the tie waist is a clever way of incorporating tailoring-style elements without resorting to a suit. 10/10 for those victory rolls.

Zendaya in Louis Vuitton

2025 marks Zendaya’s seventh Met Gala and, with the help of her long-time stylist Law Roach – she’s become quite the pro. The ivory three-piece Zoot suit, matching hat and Bulgari jewellery are, of course, incredible and this is undoubtedly shooting to the top of many an alternative bride-to-be. It also marks a bit of a tone shift for Zendaya, who has traditionally gone down the big, dramatic gown route for the Met Gala. Love.

Jodie Turner-Smith in Burberry

The. Drama. Drawing on possibly one of the most niche influences of the night – a portrait of Black equestrian Selina Lazevski taken by Paul Nader in 1891 – Burberry’s Daniel Lee took the top hats, bustles and cinched waists of Victorian and horse riding aesthetics and exaggerated them to extreme proportions. Stunning.

Colman Domingo in Valentino

The Met Gala 2025 hadn't even officially started before Colman Domingo had pulled out two really pretty great looks. Arriving in a royal blue Valentino cape, thought to be in honour of the late, great stylist (and former US Vogue staffer) André Leon Talley, who famously favoured such voluminous garments, Domingo removed it to reveal a sequin and pearl check Zoot suit. Finished with Boucheron jewellery and an Omega watch, there were also plenty of references to dandyism (the Superfine exhibition is partially based on Monica Miller's book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity). Outstanding.

Lewis Hamilton in Wales Bonner

Grace Wales Bonner is undoubtedly one of the most exciting names in menswear right now and the combination of the British designer and homegrown menswear fashion plate Lewis Hamilton is inspired. The white tie tux is pure dandy (Lewis Hamilton said Cab Calloway was very much on the moodboard) while the beret nods to the traditional style of the Black Panther Party and the fit is impeccable. Somebody did his homework.

Angela Bassett in Burberry

A look rooted in the dandy culture of NYC, in which traditional tailoring is used as a method of personal expression and identity, Bassett’s caped tuxedo exudes power. The cane and camera bag are fun touches that elevate this to Met Gala worthy; the hat feels unnecessary.

Colin Kaepernick in Ozwald Boateng and Nessa Diab in Moncler

Given the Met Gala isn’t *technically* an industry event in the same way, say, the Oscars of the Grammys are, it leaves much more wiggle room for celebs to turn fashion’s most glamorous night out into date night – and this year they’ve really been making the most of the opportunity. NFL star Colin Kaepernick took to the red carpet with girlfriend Nessa Diab, unarguably outshining her in his Ozwald Boateng caped suit. Honestly, Diab’s cropped Moncler puffer is frankly baffling; it may have enlisted Edward Enninful to design said cape but an Italian ski brand has very little to do with black tailoring. One suspects she took the colour reference a little too literally.

Sydney Sweeney in Miu Miu

Sydney Sweeney’s glitzy Miu Miu look is an homage to Kim Novak which, on the face of it, seems a little odd for a party celebrating black menswear. However, this being custom Miu Miu, Mrs Prada has, of course, put more than a little thought into. Sweeney is set to portray Novak in Scandalous, a film recounting Novak’s involvement with the Rat Pack and, in particular, her relationship with Sammy Davis Jr – an interracial affair which threatend both of their careers. The film also happens to be Colman Domingo’s directorial debut. Plus, she looks great (the De Beers jewellery is stellar). Pass.

Maya Hawke in Prada

I'm waiting for more details on Hawke's look before I pass judgement. At first glance, I'm failing to understand how this princess gown adheres to the theme (beyond the perfection of the fit). There can be a tendancy for Met Gala guests just to go big in lieu of really thinking about the nuances of their outfit but this is Prada (see above) so there may be more of a story here beyond a giant cape. TBC.

Henry Golding in Ozwald Boateng

Ozwald Boateng is perhaps the most famous black designer working in traditional, old school tailoring – except, as you can see, his take on the Savile Row look is anything but traditional. The gold jacquard, the greased forelock, the Cartier pocket watch, the undone shirt: Henry Golding is giving sexy organised crime and I’m here for it.
