Think of James Bond and espionage, villains, car chases and a good guy saving the day probably spring to mind. Think again and picture Mr Bond in his sharp tux, armed with glitzy watches and gadgets galore, sipping on an ice cold martini (shaken not stirred, of course). He may be the world’s most famous secret agent but, as a British style icon, Bond causes quite the stir in the worlds of fashion and haute living too.
His wardrobe is a fundamental part of his character – wherever he goes, whatever mission he’s on, in all his doings Bond is always impeccably dressed, from his perfectly pressed suits and crisp white shirts to his plumped-up bow ties and pristinely polished shoes. Down to the very tip of his toes, Bond epitomises sophistication, elegance and suave — and how does he choose to dress said toes? In a pair of Crockett & Jones’ finest, naturally.
Look closely and you’ll see Bond sporting a pair of Crockett & Jones’ shoes in some of the most nail-biting scenes across Skyfall, No Time to Die, and Spectre. Bond knows good shoes when he sees them and to say he is a big fan of the heritage brand is an understatement.
Crockett & Jones has been a long-standing official partner of the James Bond franchise, providing high-quality, highly dignified footwear for the 007 films. Its styles are, like Bond himself, rather timeless, so how better to celebrate Goldfinger’s 60th anniversary this year (you read that right – it’s been six decades since Sean Connery took on Gert Fröbe’s Auric Goldfinger), the British shoemaker has unveiled two new limited edition Bond-worthy shoes.
Let’s start with the Highbury 2: a reimagined version of the Crockett & Jones shoe now synonymous with Bond (and which can be spotted throughout several of the films) mixed with inspiration from the suede Derby worn by Bond in Goldfinger for a touch of mid-60s retro charm.
The design of the Highbury 2 is smart, straightforward and super versatile – a plain-fronted, three-eyelet Derby in a subtle dark brown – wear to work, weddings or simply for wandering around town. Made from fine English calf suede in the shoemaker’s Northampton factory, the Highbury 2 is fully leather-lined, features a Crockett & Jones ‘City’ rubber sole and has an all-black interior with a silver foiled logo. And the golden touch? Each pair comes beautifully boxed in exclusive 007 packaging, completes with a pair of hand-made shoe trees and a chrome shoe horn, all embossed with the iconic 007 logo.
Then there’s the latest iteration of Crockett & Jones’ signature Albert velvet slipper. Slip into these for black tie outings, impressing guests or simply to enjoy the sumptuous quilted lining. The design takes the traditional Albert velvet slipper (named after Prince Albert and inspired by an era when smoking jackets and lavish parties were ‘the thing’ for Victorian gentlemen) and emblazons them with the original Bond family coat of arms. The coat of arms first appeared in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) and feature the family motto ‘Orbis non sufficit’, meaning ‘the world is not enough’. Pair with your finest tux and it’s fair to say these slippers most definitely are.
