Mini or maxi, monochrome or multicoloured, whatever size, colour or silhouette, we’re here to tell you that polka dots are making a comeback. A classic print that balances Fifties chic with contemporary laidback style, this most versatile of print can be cool and casual, sophisticated and formal, seductive and glam – and is very much in this season. So channel your inner Dalmatian, or Julia Roberts à la Pretty Woman, and embrace the playful but polished polka dot.

Spotted on the SS25 runways at Valentino, Carolina Herrera, and Jacquemus, the timeless print has re-emerged with a fresh edge, just in time to brighten up your wardrobe for the warm weather season. From micro dots to OTT discs, and traditional black and white to colourful iterations, whether embracing retro glam or minimalist chic, there’s a polka dot for every occasion. Wear on the beach, to weddings, for a day at the races or even to work – the options are endless. Go solo for impact or mix and match with stripes, florals and vibrant shades for maximalism.

Ready to hop on the polka dot trend? Kay Barron, fashion director at Net-a-Porter, offers up her top tips for mastering the look – and the standout pieces we’re going dotty for.

Why are polka dots popular again?

“In recent months, we have seen a polka dot revival, however, it is a timeless print that never falls out of favour. While the print naturally adds a playful and fun touch to any outfit, its real strength lies in its versatility and ability to complement a wide range of styles in your wardrobe.”

Which brands are showcasing the polka dot trend?

“For SS25, polka dots dominated the runways – we saw Valentino’s black and white ruffled styles and bold, contrasting colours from Acne Studios. This silk chiffon blouse transitions effortlessly from day to night, while this co-ord from Loretta Caponi is ideal for warmer days. For a vibrant touch, this Posse dress adds the perfect pop of colour. Play with dot proportion and colour.”

Any tips on how to style polka dots?

“Polka dots have traditionally been seen as quite polished, but I personally like to give them a bit of an undone spirit. Pairing them with leather, such as an oversized biker jacket or denim cover-up, adds contrast and an element of effortless cool. I love treating prints like a pop of colour – try a neutral outfit with a printed accessory, like this playful leather bag from Khaite.”

Polka dot dresses

The simplest way to tap into the polka dot trend is with a dress. Whether a swinging 1940s tea dress style, a floor-sweeping gown, or a modern mini, a polka dot dress is highly versatile. Go whimsical and feminine with a floaty, maxi silhouette, more sultry and sexy with a figure-hugging fit and alluring shade, or for off-duty, casual vibes, opt for a shorter, boxier style.

Polka dot co-ords

Double the print, double the impact, we say. While a polka dot co-ord is bold, fun and playful, it can also be effortlessly and undeniably chic. Go matchy matchy with a skirt and top, shorts and top, or trousers and top combo and be the talk of town for your statement style. Bonus – you can also wear as separates when you’re going for something a little more subtle.

Polka dot accessories

Maybe all-over spots are a little too much for you? You can still dip into the polka dot trend with well-chosen accessories. A pair of heels, a scrunchie in your hair, or a statement bag will add a pop of vibrancy to your look and keep you on trend all season long, without committing to the full print.
