Nail the art and allure of see-through dressing

From Cher’s iconic Bob Mackie feather and sequin-adorned ‘naked dress’ at the 1974 Met Gala to Kate Moss’ legendary barely-there slip dress in 1993, sheer dressing has never been for the faint-hearted. A striking, seductive and, when done properly, incredibly stylish look, it has become an expression of sensuality, confidence, and sartorial finesse with a touch of rebellious spirit. And today’s modern take on translucent dressing continues to straddle the fine line between risqué and refined, daring but delicate.

Whether it’s fully see-through or semi-transparent, ethereal and romantic, bohemian or grungey, the sheer trend plays with visibility. Draping over the figure, skimming and enhancing the silhouette, a well constructed sheer look gives a glimpse of what lies beneath without revealing all, leaving just enough to the imagination. The effect is cheeky and sexy yet tasteful and exudes an effortless glamour that doesn’t try too hard.

Sheer dressing is not just about exposure, though – it’s about balance. The trick lies in the art of layering and styling, combining the sensual, naked aesthetic with contrasting pieces to strike a harmonious balance. Pair alluring sheer materials with opaques and block colours, structured tailoring, and elegant accents. Tone down with camis, bodysuits, and dark shorts beneath dresses, tops, and skirts for a more covered-up approach, or lean into the less-is-more look with delicate lingerie to make a statement without outright exposure. Or simply dip your toe into the trend with a sheer bag or shoe.

At the end of the day, it’s up to you how much you reveal, or don’t; the only thing to remember when jumping in on this SS25 trend is to have fun with it. But don’t just take it from us – we turned to British designer and host of fashion podcast Style DNA, Amanda Wakeley OBE, for her tips and tricks for nailing the sheer trend.

What is the key to sheer dressing?

Sheer dressing is such a beautiful way to play with texture and femininity – it’s all about mastering subtlety and confidence. The key is to keep it elegant and alluring, never overtly transparent.

Why is sheer dressing trending?

Sheer has become incredibly popular because it’s a wonderful way to introduce a hint of allure without losing sophistication. Layers of chiffon hark back to the 1970s, a trend that was prevalent on the runways, epitomised by Chloe. It offers a fresh way to experiment with layering and transparency, which feels very modern and light, especially after years of more structured dressing.

When should you wear sheer?

Sheer works best when you want to add a delicate touch to your look, whether that’s for an evening event, a special occasion, or even a day-to-night outfit. It’s important to consider the setting and occasion, as sheer pieces should always feel appropriate and tasteful. A semi sheer kaftan, for example, is wonderful for wearing over swimwear, allowing the body to be gently veiled but not completely covered.

How do you style sheer?

I love to layer sheer pieces with something more structured on top – think of a soft semi-sheer skirt or dress with an oversized mannish jacket over your shoulders, playing with the masculine/feminine vibe. Or a semi-sheer oversized ruffled top works well with a cool wide-leg jean. I would keep jewellery on the delicate side, albeit layered, in keeping with the fragility of the dress, skirt, or top. Remember, printed sheer items will always have more ‘cover’.
