Spring may have sprung, but there’s still a nip in the air. As much as we’re desperate to shed the layers, holding on to a trusty jacket will do two things: look good and keep you warm. And this season I’m coveting a funnel neck jacket. Practical, versatile and tres chic, it’s the transitional outerwear anyone with their finger on the fashion pulse is wearing.
The funnel neck jacket originally made its debut back in the 1950s, and since nostalgia is in (hello low-rise waists, baggy jeans and preppy dressing), designers have revived the silhouette, put it back on the runway and onto our radar. At Khaite and Altuzarra, the SS26 collections were full of boxy, utility designs and oversized looks in dark leather. Elsewhere, designers such as Phoebe Philo and Saint Laurent made a case for the style, while celebrities including Bella Hadid, Victoria Beckham and Hailey Bieber have been flaunting the ‘fit.

No surprise, then, that searches for ‘funnel neck jackets’ have risen by 70 per cent over the past year. Characterised by a structured turtleneck-style silhouette that grazes the jawline, it’s a style that tends towards an urban streetwear aesthetic but, when rendered in luxe leathers, wools and cashmeres, can also offer a supremely polished and sophisticated vibe.
For a contemporary twist look for buckle and zip detailing, suede and satin and fabrications, and boxy, cropped cuts. Alternatively, opt for short, relaxed, biker-style fits paired with jeans and loafers for an elevated off-duty look, or go for a flattering longline silhouette for a cosy, retro appeal.
