Butter yellow: How to make SS25’s biggest colour trend work for your wardrobe

The essential guide to wearing the light sunny shade of the season

Spring calls for a light, fresh and mood-boosting colour palette and the SS25 runways had the answer: butter yellow. Now, we know yellow is typically a bit of an acquired taste – not everyone can rock a punchy, bright canary or vibrant golden hue – but this subtle shade is easy going, flattering, and a big hitter when it comes to SS25 trends.

Butter yellow is summery and refreshing but in an understated, low-key way. It’s not OTT, like last season’s ‘Brat green’, but rather a rich, soft tone that alludes to the sunny days ahead. Think of it as the new neutral on the block – move over beige and cream – with a little more zest. As Lucinda Popp, head of apparel at lifestyle and clothing brand Bamford explains, butter yellow “accents a gentle, neutral palette, adding freshness and life to a spring wardrobe. No other colour reflects the energy and warmth of this season so perfectly.”

Dominating the SS25 catwalks at brands including 16Arlington, Zimmermann and Ami, as well as Chloe, Chanel and Alice + Olivia, there is, seemingly, no piece butter yellow doesn’t work for. Whether going all out in a two-piece skirt suit (Valentino) or fully colour-drenched look (Gucci), or adding a mere touch with a bag (Jil Sander) or by layering on a coat (Tod’s), the chic, feminine shade proved an instant hit with the fashion set.

We’ve also seen the celebrity world melting for the shade over the past few months. Katie Holmes and Ebony Obsidian have been spotted in Zimmermann’s yellow-hued styles, and Aubrey Plaza in Loewe’s take on the trend, while the likes of Emily Ratajkowski, Hailey Bieber and Rihanna have all shown their love for butter yellow.

How exactly to style butter yellow day-to-day though, we hear you ask. Well, a big plus of the colour is its versatility. The light, lemony shade is neutral enough to be worn from head to toe as a dress or co-ord, with matching shoes and accessories. Drench yourself in the soft palette for a strong, sophisticated and coordinated look.

Alternatively, try mixing and matching with other shades. Butter yellow pairs wonderfully with navy for a contrasting aesthetic, and is great for offsetting other darker hues, such as forest green and burgundy, with a pop of colour. Ease yourself in by pairing a butter yellow blouse with your favourite work skirt or dark wash jeans. Note: probably best to avoid wearing it with black unless you have bumblebees pinned to your style mood board.

Then there are accessories. Bags, shoes, hats, scarves and even sunglasses: butter yellow has made itself a force to be reckoned with in the accessory world. Choose your contender and add a playful accent to your ensemble, whether a cute pair of mules with your summer dress, or a gorgeous bag to fling over your shoulder.

Need some inspiration? We’ve chosen some of our favourite pieces to help you work the butter yellow trend seamlessly into your wardrobe this spring. You’re welcome.
