Black Friday. Once a glorious celebration of modern capitalism, it’s become a little divisive over the past few years. Spirits dampened by growing awareness of the damage overconsumption is doing to our planet, it’s no surprise that many brands (and consumers) are turning their backs on the biggest shopping day of the year. Then again, Christmas is just around the corner and, if you’re going to buy gifts anyway, why not get them at 20, 30 or 40 (maybe even 50) per cent off?

Like most indulgences, Black Friday is best approached in moderation. If a company is known to be ethically dubious now is not the time to abandon your morals in favour of low prices and, if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
