Prada may have officially put it on the fashion set’s radar with a series of recent runway moments but, as any true Brit knows, the trusty barn jacket has been a staple of countryside wardrobes for much longer. Originally designed for the great outdoors as a warm, hardy (and weatherproof) layer, it was first worn by agricultural and farm workers (hence its name) as well as manual labourers. Fast forward to today, and it’s making a comeback, with its modern upgrade quickly becoming the must-have jacket of the season.
While traditionally associated with drizzly dog walks, farm hands and chilly mornings spent mucking out stables, take a look at social media, the collections of leading fashion houses, and plenty of celebrities, including Sienna Miller, Claudia Winkleman and the Princess of Wales, and you’ll see that the barn jacket is spring’s chicest layering choice.
So what exactly is a barn jacket and why all the fuss? Well, first things first. As barn jackets were historically designed for durability, choose carefully and you can expect a style that will last. The boxy, relaxed fit cut is typically made from a hard-wearing canvas or waxed fabric and finished with a contrasting corduroy or leather collar. It usually features button or snap fastenings and has multiple pockets (handy for workers back in the day, useful for carrying your phone, sunnies and lippy now). There’s nothing overly complicated about the barn jacket – it’s simple and practical but oozes understated style.
It’s also very versatile and perfect for layering. For a classic look, pair with straight leg jeans and pumps or trainers for an everyday ensemble that is laidback with a touch of preppy nostalgia. Alternatively, wear with your favourite summer midi or slip dress for a more feminine aesthetic, or follow Alexa Chung’s lead and style with short shorts and Hunter wellies to be festival-ready (the model was famously papped at Glastonbury in a vintage Barbour iteration).
Barn jackets are usually rendered in earthy tones, like caramel, white, beige or khaki, and lined with either flannel, quilting or wool for super comfortable and cosy insulation.
