Once merely a stalwart among the British army and holidaying businessmen, Bermuda shorts have now become a runway-spotted, celebrity-approved wardrobe must-have for the modern woman. But why have Bermuda shorts, once prized purely for their utility and practicality, become such a sought-after design? We have their versatility, flattering fit and effortless style to thank.
Originating in the early 20th century, Bermuda shorts were first worn by the military during World War One when stationed in, you guessed it, Bermuda. The hotter, tropical climate called for something cool but functional, and the knee-length, loose-fit silhouette swiftly delivered. Fashion houses soon cottoned on to the tomboy alternative to short shorts and hotpants, and more than 100 years later, are still strutting them down their runways, with Dries Van Noten, Miu Miu, Burberry and Stella McCartney all featuring the style in their SS25 collections.

Lisa Illis, head of womenswear design at M&S, says: “Bermuda shorts are having a moment. The style that ticks all the boxes, the longer length is super stylish and can be an easier wear than standard shorts, while the looser shape (often with a pleat front) is cooler and more comfortable – perfect for summer and early autumn.”
Less leggy, more modest and flattering for all shapes and sizes, Bermuda shorts are perfect for work, rest and play. Whether choosing cotton, linen, denim or even leather fabrications, they can be smart, sophisticated, casual or laidback, and are seriously in this summer. But how exactly should you be wearing them? We’ve got the lowdown on how to style the ‘it’ silhouette below.
Go all black
Going all black in the summer months may not seem the most obvious choice, but when it comes to styling Bermuda shorts, it works — trust us (or Bella Hadid). Pair your slick black Bermudas, whether denim, linen or tailored cotton, with a matching dark-hued top, blouse or shirt and ooze instant easy sophistication. A super simple but put-together look, the monotone palette offers something smart for formal summer occasions, and something a little bit sultry and sexy for balmy date nights. Illis says: “Nail summer office dressing with a monochromatic ensemble. Think honey neutrals or black Bermudas with a matching sleeveless knit or waistcoat. Pair with tonal sandals or loafers and add gold jewellery to elevate the simplicity.”
Go casual
Does it get simpler, more comfy or more effortless than wearing your favourite jeans and a T-shirt? In summer, yes. Swap out your trusty jeans for a pair of denim Bermuda shorts. Equally easy in feel and style, they are highly versatile and ideal for dressing up or down – a no-brainer when it comes to weekends. Perfectly balancing casual with cool, choose styles in a light blue wash and wear with a crisp white boxy T-shirt (tucked in or left loose) for extra style points. A go-to look for the day-to-day in summer.
Illis suggests: “For a more off-duty look, opt for denim and pair them with a cropped graphic T-shirt and chunky sandals. Layer with an oversized bomber or lightweight utility jacket.”
Go preppy
For something a little less casual but still subtle and pared back, pair your Bermuda shorts with a stripy tailored shirt and loafers for the ultimate preppy vibe. Mix up the look with a polo shirt for a sporty edge with a touch of Parisian cool, whether on your coffee run, commute or dans le pub.
Take on holiday
If you’re jetting off somewhere warm, pack a pair of Bermuda shorts to keep you cool but on trend, wherever in the world you find yourself. Illis adds: “Why not lean into the look by accessorising with a wide-brimmed or straw bucket hat?”

If you’re feeling a little bolder, opt for a pair of leather Bermuda shorts. Offering both a smart and casual style with a little grungy, modern edge, it’s the perfect way to make a statement from throughout summer and into autumn. Perhaps not the most conventional fabric for the warmer weather, but worn with an easy, breezy top, you’ll be cool and rock instant summer vibes. Finish with sandals or killer heels, the choice is yours.
