Golf courses and your grandfather’s winter wardrobe might spring to mind when you think of argyle jumpers. Or perhaps librarians, lecturers and school uniforms. But after recently making an appearance on the runways and being seen wrapped around the shoulders of the high-fashion style set, it seems argyle jumpers are making an unexpected comeback. And this time, they’re anything but old and stuffy.

Rooted in 17th-century Scotland and derived from the tartan of the Clan Campbell of Argyll, the distinctive overlapping diamond pattern has a quintessentially Highlands heritage feel. It was then British knitwear brand Pringle that ushered argyle into the fashion sphere during the Roaring Twenties, transforming it into the unofficial sweater vest of the golfing elite that was preppy, practical and playful. Fast forward to 2025, and designer collections are now awash with bold interpretations of the traditional print.

From Khaite and Miu Miu to Burberry and Dior, the most iconic fashion houses have tapped into the trend with polished, colourful and quirky iterations. As with all cyclical trends, we’re now seeing them appear everywhere, from designer brands to Claudia Winkleman’s Traitors’ Highlands chic that can be found on the high street. As a result, argyle is proving to be one of the most versatile knitwear trends of the season.

An easy hack to effortless autumnal dressing, argyle jumpers can be worn anywhere and everywhere, from at home to brunch to work. Go full preppy golfer attire and wear a fitted silhouette with an Oxford shirt peeping out underneath, paired with a mini skirt and ballet pumps. Alternatively, embrace a relaxed retro fit when styling with socks and loafers. However you’re choosing to shake up your wardrobe with the pattern du moment, shop our edit of the best argyle jumpers to be seen in this season.
