When it comes to the Oscars red carpet, it’s not just the gowns that prove a worthy talking point. A showcase for some of the msot dazzling creations from the world’s greatest jewellery houses, if diamonds are your thing, this is where to get your inspiration. And at the Oscars 2025 there was only one style to be seen wearing: the choker necklace.

Before you recoil with visions of the stretchy, skin pinching chokers of the Nineties and Noughties (remember those?), this is not that. Instead the new generation of choker necklaces are rendered in diamonds and precious metals and sit elegantly on the clavicle, offering a fresh, more minimalist alternative to your usual jewellery stack. Take, for example, Zoe Saldana’s intricate Cartier version featuring the house’s signature Panthere design, or Elle Fanning’s vintage scalloped design, also by Cartier, which was originally designed in 1958.

Ariana Grande, meanwhile, chose a more dainty De Beers design and Kaitlyn Dever opted for a choker-style tennis necklace by Swarovski for the Vanity Fair Oscar after party, proving that you needn’t have the budget for diamonds to look like an A-lister.

The bet tthing about the revival of the choker necklace, however, is its versatility. While at the Oscars they were worn with glamorous gowns, a great choker will look just as good with jeans and a T-shirt or work under a silk blouse at the office. They can also be as big and bold or simple and understated as your day and style preferences dictate. Love a bit of sparkle? A full stone-set design is for you. More of a minimalist? A sculptural, unset piece by one of London’s exciting contemporary jewellery brands is for you.
