The best celebrity looks from the Cannes Film Festival 2025

Join us on la Croisette for this year's most memorable red carpet appearances

The sun is shining, the rosé is on ice, and the great and good from the worlds of film and fashion are headed to the French Riviera for the most glamorous event of the season: the Cannes Film Festival 2025 (just don’t tell Venice I said that). La Croisette has once again been adorned in its crimson finery, the superyachts are lined up awaiting after parties, and anyone who’s anyone has got a suite at the Hôtel Martinez and a vault’s worth of Chaumet diamonds from which to choose.

What they won’t have this year is long trains and ‘naked’ dresses. The Cannes Film Festival dress code, already known for being one of the most stringent on the circuit (in 2015 it banned flat shoes for women before making a hasty about-turn after a lot of, frankly understandable, backlash), has once again been updated to prevent attendees wearing ‘voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train’ in an apparent bid to prevent traffic jams on the red carpet and simplify seating arrangements inside the theatre.

The 2025 rules also state that ‘for decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the Red Carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival.’ Doesn’t sound so unreasonable on paper but, with sheer gowns a perennial trend among Hollywood starlets and stylists looking to cause a stir, the updated dress code, published the day before the festival opened, has seemingly caused quite the flurry of last minute outfit changes.

Bella Hadid, who flashed a nipple on last year’s red carpet, appeared in a much more demure black gown this time around, while Halle Berry said that the black-and-white Jacquemus gown she wore to the opening ceremony wasn’t her first choice. “I had an amazing dress by [Gauruv] Gupta to wear tonight and I cannot wear it because the train is too long,” she explained. “Of course, I’m going to follow the rules, so I had to make a pivot.”

So, who got the memo and who’s going to be turned away at the door? Bookmark this page as we bring you all the must-see celebrity looks from the Cannes Film Festival 2025.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior

If we ignore the (I’m guessing) hastily hacked off train, this is all very ‘French seaside chic’ – which is pretty much the brief for the entire Cannes Film Festival. I’m not enamoured by the tricky hemline and she could have done something a little more interesting with her shoe choice but the pleats are very pretty and the simple hair and makeup were the perfect way to go.

Daisy Edgar-Jones in Gucci

This certainly isn’t groundbreaking but it is pretty great on her. The simple silhouette leans into her recent preference towards a more laidback style but with just enough sparkle for the red carpet. The real showstopper, however, is that necklace. Truly stunning.

Natalie Portman in Dior

The bust bow feels unecessary and overcomplicates what is otherwise a pretty fantastic look. Slicked back buns are clearly having a bit of a moment – and when you’re sporting that many carats of diamonds why not show them off?

Angelina Jolie in Brunello Cucinelli

It’s not often we get a Brunello Cucinelli red carpet moment that isn’t a tux so this is both refreshing and really rather lovely. The champagne hue is a little softer than her usual more severe style choices but it’s a good choice for an outdoor spring event and that new lighter hair colour. The necklace is gorgeous but she could have done with the matching bracelet to finish the look.

Robert Pattison in Dior

Okay, I know this is only a photocall but given that, until a few years ago, it was a literal requirement that every woman show up in 5 inch heels, would it have killed him to put on a proper pair of shoes? Or a shirt? Or look in anyway like he hadn’t forgetten this whole thing was happening until five minutes ago? It’s a shame because each individual piece is actually rather nice but the finished look is much less than the sum of its parts.

Bella Hadid in Saint Laurent

Even with the extreme thigh split this is far more demure than her outing at Cannes last year – clearly the new dresscode is having the desired effect. It’s a tad underwhelming – especially in the shoe department – but given she’s in attendance as a guest of jewellery house Chopard perhaps the dress isn’t really the point here. After all, those earrings certainly don’t need any backup singers.

Halle Berry in Jacquemus

Oh to be a Hollywood star with a showstopping gown by one of Europe’s hottest designers as a mere backup option. It’s a shame we won’t get to see Berry’s first choice as it sounds pretty dramatic, but this looks great on her. The perfect neckline to set off that on-trend bob.

Juliette Binoche in Dior

It’s giving ‘mysteriously widowed mother-in-law upstaging the bride on her wedding day’ and I’m here for it. Binoche is the grande dame of this year’s Cannes jury and looks every inch the part. No notes.

Bella Hadid in Jacquemus

Only at Cannes would you find a supermodel wearing this many diamonds as part of an 'off-duty' look. See also: the head-to-toe Jacquemus look taken from the designer's couture-inspired La Croisiere collection. It's not entirely clear why a model should be at what is ostensibly a trade event for the film industry, but I'm glad she is.

Julia Garner in Gucci

Seemingly coming as close to a long-trained naked dress as this year’s rules will allow, one has to wonder if some emergency adjustments weren’t made to this gown. The whole thing looks simultaneously half-hearted and far too heavy for the French Riviera in May. Great jewellery though.

Eva Longoria in Tamara Ralph

Eva Longoria has never been one to shy away from a statement gown, so it’s encouraging to see her realising her final form as a proper old-school Hollywood diva. She looks fabulous and that giant bow is a great way of flouting the train rules.

Jeremy Strong in Lanvin

Jeremy Strong is a one-man argument for the return of the bucket hat – and, honestly, he’s making a good case for it. Given his style preferences can be neatly described as ‘Mancunian weed dealer who won the lottery’, this is right in his wheelhouse – and makes him easily one of the most interesting stars in menswear right now.

Daniel Kaluuya in Dior

It’s a fairly basic tux so, really, there’s not a whole lot to say other than it’s well cut and fits him nicely. The jacket could possibly have been an inch or so shorter but that’s a mere quibble. Excellent jewellery choices.

Julia Garner in Gucci

The irony of Cannes is that the (extremely curated) ‘street style’ looks are often far more interesting than anything on the red carpet. This is simple but chic and those sunglasses were the ideal choice for her platinum curls. Gucci should give her a raise for the way she’s modelling that handbag.

Jeremy Strong in Loro Piana

Do a short survey of Jeremy Strong’s recent red carpet appearances and you’ll begin to wonder if he isn’t merely cosplaying as a film star. Everything he wears seems to come with a slight whiff of stright-laced irony, as if he realises how absurd it is to put on a £5,000 linen suit for the express purpose of having your picture taken while ‘at work’, but is happy to play along because, secretly, he quite enjoys it. Like I said, one of the most interesting stars in menswear.
