Sun, heat, humidity: not exactly the best workout conditions (there’s a reason some of us choose anything but that hot Pilates class). While the summer sunshine is ideal for lounging around poolside, beachside or simply in your garden, when it comes to working out, it can prove slightly more of a challenge. However, having the right activewear can change your session completely.
Lightweight, breathable and sweat-wicking fabrics should be your go-to to help regulate your core body temperature, keep sweat at bay and ensure you feel as cool and comfortable as possible, whether running, stretching, lifting or cycling. Pair with smart timings – aim for early mornings or later in the evening when the sun is down, and temperatures drop – and you’ll be ready, set, go to stay active all summer long. Need some inspiration? We’ve picked out some of our favourite summer activewear below.
Shorts
Forget leggings; when the warm weather hits, it’s time to bring out the shorts. Whether in the yoga studio practising hatha, vinyasa or ashtanga; lifting dumbbells and kettlebells while squatting and lunging at the gym, or clocking up the miles on your morning run, keep cool with legs allowed to breathe. Look for styles that combine maximum support with lightweight, sweat-wicking and breathable fabrics that move with you.
Tops
Like leggings should be swapped out with shorts, long-sleeved workout tops should take a break in the summer. Instead, opt for vest tops, crop tanks and supportive sports bras to keep you cool while working up a sweat in the heat. Prefer a little more coverage? Choose capped sleeve styles made from technical, lightweight fabrics that are cool, airy and will wick moisture away from the skin.
Swimwear
Unsurprisingly, swimming becomes quite popular during the summer months. Unlike in winter, when the idea of diving into cool water may send chills down your spine, there’s nothing more refreshing than an outdoor swim or racking up some lengths in the pool when temperatures rise. A low-impact, full-body workout without getting too hot and sweaty, swimming ticks all the boxes for summer exercise. Invest in a streamlined swimsuit designed for performance and sport, rather than sunbathing, and don’t forget a good pair of steam-resistant goggles.
Accessories
The finishing touches that can make a big difference to your performance. From a good water bottle to keep you hydrated before, during and after your workout to a cap and sunglasses to protect your face, scalp and eyes from direct sunlight when outside running or cycling, and a handy microfibre towel to pack in your gym bag to keep the sweat at bay, these extras can be just as important as your outfit.
