The sun is (just about) out, which can only mean one thing: it’s officially sunglasses season. Although, who are we kidding? Sunglasses are a year-round essential as far as we’re concerned. Come rain or shine, there is always a reason to finesse a look with the perfect pair.

This spring, however, eyewear is taking a bold turn. It’s all about statement shapes and dramatic silhouettes, from chunky aviators to sharp, accentuated cat-eyes, alongside nostalgic oval frames and barely-there wire styles. Senne Huveneers, head of design at Chimi sunglasses, notes: “Statement eyewear is evolving this season, from bold, ’70s-inspired aviators to oversized silhouettes that lean into Y2K glamour. Thicker frames bring structure and attitude, while larger shapes play with proportion to deliver a more controlled kind of drama.”

With that in mind, consider this your inside scoop on the sunglasses trends set to take over this season. We’ve even put together a spring shopping list to inspire your eyewear update. You’re welcome.

Oversized aviators

Think the bigger, the better. Statement eyewear is leading the way this season – and oversized aviators provide maximum impact. A timeless style that offers a nostalgic touch with a sporty edge, the SS26 collections at Saint Laurent and Loewe confirmed it’s a silhouette that’s not going anywhere – in fact, it’s just getting bigger. Go big and chunky for a dramatic look that does far more than just accessorise.

Modern cat-eyes

Another classic frame that is equal parts chic and sophisticated, the 1950s-inspired cat-eye has been elevated this season with a modern twist for contemporary women. Sharper angles, elongated corners and striking jet black frames, as seen at Max Mara and Bottega Veneta, make this a style for the daring women who want something polished, intentional, and a little bit sassy.

Bold bug-eyes

Another statement-making sunglass style is the bug-eye. Big, dramatic and bulbous, the playful silhouette brings an exaggerated look to your wardrobe, and it’s proving a popular choice this spring. Follow the lead of designers such as Khaite and Alaïa and opt for bold, high-impact maximalist frames this season; guaranteed to get heads turning.

Wire frames

Offering a more delicate alternative to this season’s bolder, bigger styles, wire frames bring a quietly sophisticated look thanks to their barely-there appeal. Fine metal structures in all shapes and silhouettes create a refined aesthetic that is versatile and less shouty than other designs, but no less timeless and elegant.
