Clogs have come a long way from their humble beginnings. Once a functional shoe carved from solid wood to protect workers’ feet, over the decades it has been reimagined and reinvented to become a fashion staple in its own right. And, this season, it’s more covetable than ever.
Originating in the Netherlands in the early 13th century, clogs were designed to provide practical, durable and climate-appropriate footwear for the long and rigorous shifts of industrial and agricultural workers. Characterised by traditional craftsmanship, with sturdy, comfortable soles and protective uppers, the Dutch wooden shoes soon made their way out of Amsterdam and Rotterdam and filtered throughout the rest of Europe thanks to their utilitarian style.
But, as with so many blue collar staples — denim jeans, chore jackets, and cargo trousers, to name just a few — clogs have stuck around (and worked their way into the wardrobes of those very unlikely to find themselves on a farm in Utrecht). From bohemian iterations from the disco and punk-rock eras of the 1970s, worn with bell-bottoms and tie-dye, to the chunky platform styles of the 1990s, paired with crop tops and vintage high-waisted jeans, this retro shoe is ever evolving. Today, the clog is nostalgic, blends boho chic with minimalist style and comfort, and everybody from the runway to the high street has gone mad for it.
Clogs have been spotted stomping down the catwalks at Chloe, Etro, Miu Miu and Hermes, while global brands, such as Birkenstock and Ugg, have hopped on board the revival trend too. So, what’s the fuss? Easy to slip on, they are comfortable and effortless, and promise the perfect balance between summer sandal and something a little more all-weather appropriate. They’re also unisex by design, giving them inherent ‘borrowed from the boys’ appeal.
So which pair to buy now? There’s the classic silhouette – a flat, open-back mule – perfect for everyday ease, whether worn with your favourite denim and tee or floaty maxi dress. Throw on a cardigan for a cosy, chic but casual look and wear for nipping to the corner shop, pottering around the garden or heading out to lunch. Alternatively, style with head-to-toe linen in muted tones for a laidback, warm-weather look, suitable for beach days and city strolls alike, matcha – or mojito – in hand.
For something a little more grungy, edgy and Noughties-inspired, choose chunkier versions with platform soles. Finish the cool-girl look with a denim jacket and big gold jewellery. When evening hits, or for more formal events, slip on a block heel version with tailoring or an LBD for a polished look that is sophisticated yet straightforward.
