Property of the Month: A secluded jungle compound on the Costa Rican coastline

Two imposing, design-led villas boast cutting-edge architecture, extensive outdoor amenities and proximity to all that the remote Nicoya Peninsula has to offer

We interrupt regular programming to bring you a new sort of Property of the Month: we’re heading not to the mansions of west London or the lofts of east, but across the Atlantic to Magna Pacific: a pair of jaw-dropping homes in the Central American rainforest.

This exclusive compound was completed in 2023, and comprises not one, but two turnkey villas, Nalani and Elu. Together, they span a total of an acre and include ten bedrooms and nine bathrooms.

Magna Pacific combines barefoot luxury with ultra-modern architecture – Nalani and Elu were designed by the current owner in collaboration with local studio, Instinto, with interior design from Mexico-based Casa Moa. The villas feature geometric forms, high ceilings and Balinese-inspired columns; crucially, these design choices merge the indoors and outdoors, enhanced by three-metre-high glass walls, huge doors which lead to various decks, balconies and terraces, and landscaping that mirrors the organic shapes of the jungle.

Villa Nalani, the larger of the two, features a distinctive canopy-style roof, providing views of the sky above and the sea directly below (this is one of few properties in the area with a sea view). Tiger stone adorns the exterior walls, while the open-plan interior is populated by wooden beams, teak and marble finishes, Italian leather furniture, and Bali stone floors. All bedrooms have ocean views, en suite bathrooms, and private entrances. Similarly, Villa Elu boasts en suite bedrooms and panoramic views of Playa Hermosa beach.

Outdoor spaces are just as important as indoor ones here (you’re in Costa Rica; you’re going to want to spend a lot of time outdoors). At Villa Nalani, lava stone adorns the 25-metre lap pool, which spills into a west-facing infinity pool; the pool at Villa Elu, meanwhile, adjoins a 12-seat al fresco dining area complete with a barbecue grill, and outdoor showers nestled in the greenery. The grounds at Magna Pacific feature fruit trees, sequestered gathering spots, and secure parking behind a gated entrance. The whole complex feels like an art gallery, or a work of sculpture itself.

As mentioned, as well as being surrounded by greenery, the compound also has the benefit of being located just a short walk from Playa Hermosa, a crystal-water beach fringed by ridges of volcanic rock. The property is also a short ATV (all-terrain vehicle) ride from Santa Teresa, Costa Rica’s surfing destination for the rich and famous, not to mention spots for deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, kayaking, horseback riding and zipline tours. Then there’s the beach town of Santa Teresa, and its bohemian shops, restaurants and bars, located just 4km from the property.

Despite the sequestered nature of Magna Pacific, you’re surrounded by activity here – there’s even a nearby helipad that links residents to the private jet terminal at Cóbano Airport. The multifaceted charms of the Nicoya Peninsula have long attracted HNW visitors and residents, as evidenced by the number of celebrity-owned estates on the same ridgeline.

When people talk about ‘getting away from it all’, this is surely what they mean. That is, being surrounded by dense tropical vegetation on one side and the surf breaks of the Pacific on the other. We don’t know about you, but we’d take that over a three-bedroom apartment in central London any day.

Magna Pacific is on the market for $15,950,000 (approx. £12,310,000), christiesrealestate.com
