60 Curzon: Inside the Mayfair celebrity haunt turned Art Deco property

With a range of lateral apartments, a townhouse, and two remarkable duplex penthouses, 60 Curzon is set to become one of Mayfair's most prestigious addresses

Once the site of culinary institution and 1960s celebrity haunt, Mirabelle, the new 60 Curzon, which has just reached completion, promises a range of iconic and impeccably-curated residences in the heart of Mayfair. The eight-storey property features 32 Art Deco-inspired private homes, comprising lateral apartments, pied-a-terres, a townhouse, and two duplex penthouses, boasting a wraparound private terrace and horizon-touching vistas of the capital.

The first residential building in Europe designed by the late Thierry Despont, with exterior architecture by PLP Architecture, the building’s Portland Stone exterior blends intricate bronze ironmongery with hand-glazed faience tiles. With such heavy hitters behind the project (Despont restored the Statue of Liberty no less), it is unsurprising the pair have been successful in saluting the architectural legacy of the building with a façade that combines the heritage of Mayfair while alluding to the elegance of Paris’ 6th and 7th arrondissements, and the opulence of New York’s Upper East Side. Elsewhere, palatial balconies and a private courtyard garden, inspired by English woodlands, have been created by Gustafson Porter + Bowman.

Famed designer Despont – whose portfolio also includes New York’s 220 Central Park South, The Ritz, Paris and London’s Claridge’s – is also responsible for the look and feel of the communal spaces, as well as two apartments. Flooded with natural light, the soaring ceilings, paired with dual and triple aspects, add a unique touch of theatre. As Despont would say, “everything is in the quality of the detail”.

Residents can also expect top-of-the-range services and amenities, overseen by property management company Rhodium, from round-the-clock concierge, security, and valet car parking to a beautiful and practical spa, complete with a swimming pool, gym, sauna, steam room and private fitness and treatment rooms. For those looking for a quiet, private space, to either work or meet with friends, the Club Lounge-meets-meeting room and elegant reception lobby are just the ticket.

If you’re planning to entertain, there are also temperature-controlled rooms to accommodate personal beverage collections, from rare whiskies to fine wines and cigars. Plus, each of the penthouses also comes with its own additional private amenity space. “I like to create a small universe,” said Despont. “From the master plan to the touch of a door, from the trees planted outside, to the way people will sit and eat and dance inside.”

Paying tribute to the site’s gastronomic past – once a favourite of Orson Welles and Winston Churchill and which, under Marco Pierre White’s leadership, earnt a Michelin star in 2000 before closing eight years later – a core focus of the reimagined building is its new restaurant. Complete with prviate residents-only dining rooms, this storied culinary space promises to make waves on Mayfair’s dining scene once again.

Backed by a board including Charles Leigh, who will oversee new interior design partnerships, and Alex Michelin, co-founder at Valouran, expectations are unsurprisingly high. With two existing apartments entirely designed by Thierry Despont available to buy turnkey, work has recently commenced on the design of three new homes by a series of notable interior studios, including Elicyon, set to be revealed this autumn. We suspect potential owners are in for a treat.
