Seeking some opulence and entertainment in dreary January? The Favourite, starring Emma Stone, Olivia Coleman, Rachel Weisz and Nicholas Hoult, is a brilliant new period drama with a subversive twist, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster). The Golden Globe-nominated film follows the story of a madcap Queen Anne (Coleman), her close friend Lady Sarah (Weisz) and a new guest, Abigail Hill (Stone), who becomes Anne’s confidante while hoping to return to her Aristocratic roots.

This one-of-a-kind supper club, hosted by nomadic bakery, The Bread Companion, shows you how to transform your Christmas tree into a delicious feast, which starts with spruce and beetroot-cured salmon and finishes with pinenut brownies. 100 Figures: The Unseen Art of Quentin Blake Exhibition, King’s Cross (all weekend)

Quentin Blake, the English artist and writer most famous for illustrating Roald Dahl’s books, is celebrated this weekend at The House of Illustration. The exclusive exhibition showcases Blake’s private practice of previously unseen figurative artwork featuring large-scale pieces created over 50 years – from 1950 to 2000 – and ranges from oil paintings to prints and drawings. A ticket to this exhibition allows visitors to explore all areas of the gallery.

The Plant Hub Opens in London Fields (all weekend)

Opening this Friday, The Plant Hub is a vibrant new culinary space in Hackney featuring a plant-based cookery school and kitchen. The project was launched through crowdfunding and welcomes guest chefs each month for a calendar of inspiring seasonal classes, including a ‘decadent desert’ workshop and life-drawing.

Blessing of the Thames, London Bridge (Saturday)

Gather along the River Thames this Saturday for a unique spectacle: The Blessing of The River Thames. The annual celebration sees the River blessed by parishes of Southwark Cathedral and St Magnus the Martyr Cathedral. The custom as it is today was established in the 21st century but it is said to be based on the ancient ceremony of blessing the waters every Sunday; a tradition which was conducted by the Orthodox Church.
