Everything we know about The Devil Wears Prada 2
A new Devil Wears Prada film? For spring? Groundbreaking
The rumour mill for a sequel of The Devil Wears Prada – the cult 2006 film based on the eponymous book by Lauren Weisberger – has been churning ever since the first instalment was released two decades ago. More than just commercially successful, having earned more than $326m worldwide on a $41m budget, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of that year, it was also a cultural phenomenon. Having reimagined the image of a modern working woman in fashion, and delivering one of the most quoted scripts of all time, The Devil Wears Prada is nothing short of iconic.
Should you need a refresher, Meryl Streep plays Miranda Priestly: a character supposedly modelled on Anna Wintour, who has served as editor-in-chief (EIC) of Vogue since 1988. The story follows Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), a budding journalist who lands a job at fashion magazine Runway and soon becomes immersed in the competitive world of fashion while dealing with her nightmarish editor.
Perhaps because audiences thought there was some truth in it (Weisberger did work for Wintour at one point) or simply because it allowed us a glimpse into the revered world of fashion magazines, it was a rave success. Add to that a stellar cast, iconic lines – “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking.” – and a New York City setting, and The Devil Wears Prada was a perfect storm.
In 2016, Streep – despite being nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Priestly – reportedly said she was not interested in making a sequel. Meanwhile, in 2019, Hathaway said she would be tempted to work with the same cast but it needed to be “something totally different” from the original. While the likelihood of a sequel waned, fans did get a second dose of the drama when it was adapted for the West End in 2022 with a score by Elton John. But nothing sent the world into a spin quite like confirmation of a sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is debuting in cinemas on 1 May 2026.

Coincidence or not, the release date happens to be a week before the biggest night in fashion, the Met Gala, which always takes place on the first Monday in May. Plus, production started the same week Wintour stepped away from her role as EIC of Vogue. The eagle eyed may also have spotted a few Easter eggs over the past few years: Hathaway wore a cerulean dress when she reunited with Streep and co-star Emily Blunt at the 2024 SAG Awards, and Variety reported whisperings of a sequel at Disney HQ last year. But it wasn’t until an extremely well-dressed Hathaway and Streep were photographed in production on the streets of New York in July 2025 that we got the green light.
Excitement peaked again last night (12 November 2025) when the first teaser trailer was released for The Devil Wears Prada 2. Following a bright red pair of Valentino heels as they clack through a busy office, to the soundtrack of Madonna’s Vogue and showing snippets of red carpets, flashing cameras and couture gowns, the camera finally pans up to show both Streep (donning iconic shades just like Wintour) and Hathaway in a lift together. Can’t wait until May 2026 for the full scoop? Here’s everything we know about The Devil Wears Prada 2 so far.
What’s the sequel about?
Superfans will know that Weisberger wrote a sequel in 2013 named Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, but it’s not been confirmed that the new film will follow that plot exactly. In the book, Andy has just turned 30, is a successful magazine editor in her own right and works closely with her former Runway colleague, Emily (played by Blunt), now in advertising for a luxury brand, when Priestly re-enters their lives.
This time, however, the tables have seemingly turned as Priestly grapples with huge changes in traditional magazine publishing as it moves towards a digital-first approach. Priestly has to extend an olive branch, and build bridges with former assistant Emily as Runway competes for advertiser spend.
Unsurprisingly, the cast have often been asked what they think their characters would be doing now. Hathaway said in a 2022 interview: “I think [Andy] is writing for a wonderful French women's magazine. I think she's a staff writer and she speaks French fluently. I don't think she's married, but she might have a child or two. I think she's pretty fab.” How close that is to the new plot is anyone’s guess…
Who is in The Devil Wears Prada 2?
Streep returns for what is set to be her first film since 2021, while Hathaway and Blunt are set to reunite with Stanley Tucci as art director Nigel – but whether he is still Priestly’s right-hand man or not is unconfirmed. Original director David Frankel, of Marley & Me and Hope Springs fame, has also teamed up with the film's original producer, Wendy Finerman, and writer Aline Brosh McKenna who, since 2006, has worked her screenplay magic on films such as Cruella and 27 Dresses.
A new name joining the cast is English actor Kenneth Branagh, playing the next Mr Priestly, while there’s a whole roll-call of actors rumoured to be joining the lineup, including Lady Gaga, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Simone Ashley and Patrick Brammall. Gird your loins. Seriously.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in cinemas on 1 May 2026.
