Art on a Postcard announces first all-female charity auction
Paddles at the ready for this online International Women’s Day auction, which will raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust
A leading group of women artists has been selected to take part in a special International Women’s Day charity auction. Hosted by Art on a Postcard, a platform that provides the opportunity to buy limited-edition artworks by burgeoning and established talent at affordable prices, the auction will include more than 100 miniature works, each starting from £50.
Traditionally known for its secret auctions, for which artists’ names are anonymous until after the sale has closed, Art on a Postcard has defied convention and announced the names of the contributors ahead of time.
“We are known for our secret auctions,” says Gemma Peppé, founder and director of Art on a Postcard, “however we want to shout about all the fantastic women taking part in this iteration of Art on a Postcard and show off their wonderful work, so this time you will know who you are bidding on.”
Among the artists involved are Harmony Hammond, who recently hosted her first solo European exhibition at Bermondsey’s White Cube gallery, and the world-renowned Guerilla Girls, an anonymous group of feminist, female artists committed to fighting sexism and racism within the art industry. Caroline Coon, who has exhibited at the Tate and the Saatchi Gallery, will also be involved, along with Genieve Figgis, Vanessa Jackson RA, Anne Tallentire, Ellen Gronemeyer, Orkideh Torabi, Helen Johnson, Celia Hempton and Katherine Bernhardt.
The auction will raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust, a charity that is campaigning to eradicate hepatitis C by 2025. Based on case studies that suggest treating women has a greater impact on local communities (and subsequently society in general), the charity is working closely with women’s prisons in the UK to help eliminate the disease.
In addition to the auction, Art on a Postcard has partnered with women’s-only members’ club AllBright to host a day of events and talks featuring a number of the participating artists. Caroline Coon and Vanessa Jackson RA will be among those contributing to panel discussions, which will be followed by a private view and drinks reception.
