What to gift Dad for Christmas? The annual winter conundrum that gets no easier with the passing years (arguably it gets harder, as the old man’s hobbies and general interests wane). The Telegraph recently asked hundreds of its male readers what they’d most like to find under the tree come Christmas Day. Perhaps they couldn’t be bothered to think, or maybe they are just genuinely really into their malts, but whisky was the out-and-out winner. Other most-wanted presents included other types of booze, power tools and socks – suggesting dads find it just as hard to think outside of the ribbon-topped box as their despairing offspring.

Added pressure this year, too, thanks to the John Lewis Christmas advert. Ever since the department store released its festive tearjerker – which sees a teenage son reduce his middle-aged father to tears with a trip down memory lane – the burden to pick a present that will actually mean something has only intensified. Below are some suggestions that will demonstrate that your search took you further than the local off-license, from golfing accessories to statement knitwear, and from limited-edition prints to go-anywhere watches. If all else fails, there’s always a vinyl of Alison Limerick’s 1990 dancefloor filler, and new John Lewis theme song, Where Love Lives, if you can get your hands on one.

Burberry Cashmere Cardigan

Burberry is the British brand of the moment, following a festival-inspired summer campaign fronted by Liam Gallagher and Goldie, and a London-focused ‘postcards’ series featuring cricket, cheese-and-pickle sandwiches, and Olivia Coleman serving fish and chips. The Knight emblem is back, and Burberry is doing what it does best – elevated outerwear and understated premium knits – such as this buttoned and collared cardigan in ultra-soft cashmere. Constructed to offer an element of stretch, the cardigan is knitted with tonal elbow patches, chain-stitching at the shoulders, and the iconic Equestrian Knight emblem above the hem. Have it monogrammed to make things personal.

Ettinger Capra Golf Tidy

Few are the remaining independent leather manufacturers in the United Kingdom. Even fewer are those that remain in the hands of the families that founded them. Ettinger was established by Gerry Ettinger in 1934, and, despite relocating from London’s traditional leather quarter in Bermondsey to Walsall in the West Midlands, continues to be run by his eldest son, Robert. It’s in Walsall that this two-ball Golf Tidy is manufactured. Crafted from durable, extra-soft goat leather, the tidy also includes room for two tees, a metal pitch repairer, and a monogrammed ball marker. What it can’t do, sadly, is improve a golf-loving dad’s handicap.

Watches

Harry Winston Emerald Automatic

It’s been 100 years since Paris hosted the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, the event that would provide the Art Deco movement with its moniker. The design aesthetic was in full swing when American businessman Harry Winston founded his eponymous jewellers in 1932, his early pieces characterised by symmetry, geometric forms and architectural aspects. That design DNA continues to run through not only Harry Winston’s jewellery collections, but it’s watches, too. With its distinctive octagonal case, the Emerald Automatic, for example, takes inspiration from the geometry of an emerald-cut diamond, a hallmark of the era’s obsession with balance and precision. A crystal caseback showcases the finely finished bridges of an automatic movement.

SONIC EDITIONS Porsche CarreraPS in Palm Springs

dThe team at London-based Sonic Editions travels the world to source rare, archival, and iconic photographs, which the company then releases in limited-edition print runs. Best-selling photographs include an image of Roger Moore taken by Peter Ruck, a shot of Frank Sinatra by John Dominis, and a still of David Bowie by Terry O’Neil. It was this more recent shot of a 2024 Porsche CarreraPS, however, that most caught our eye. It was captured in Palm Springs by celebrated automotive photographer Huseyin Erturk. Only 495 prints are being created, and are available exclusively through MrPorter.com.
